Evening Update Friday 12 January 2024

Two teenagers have been injured after the bus in which they were traveling fell ten meters into a ravine near Levens this morning. The only other person on board was the driver who was also injured. The bus came to rest on the train tracks near the village. Firefighters attended the scene and extinguished a fire which broke out after the accident. Nice Mayor and President of the Nice Cote d'Azur metropolis Christian Estrosi visited the scene this afternoon. He said that the bus was driven by a driver from a subcontractor of the authority. He asked the company to shed light on the circumstances which led to the accident.

Annual inflation in France rose slightly in December to 3.7%, up from 3.5% in November, according to government statistics office INSEE. It said that on average, prices increased by 4.9% over the whole of last year, down from an average of 5.2% in 2022.

New French prime minister Gabriel Attal and the new Minister of National Education, Amelie Oudea-Castera have been visiting a college in the Yvelines department to the west of Paris today. Since his appointment as head of the government, Gabrial Attal has made it clear that he will continue to be involved in overseeing education policy. He previously spent five months as education minister.

A training ship of the Peruvian Navy has arrived in Nice. Two hundred Peruvian cadets and sailors are on board the BAP Union. The vessel is traveling around the world, passing through 5 continents and 14 countries. It's not the first time the ship has been in Nice though, this is its thirteenth visit. Nice residents and visitors will be able to visit free of charge until next Monday, January 15.

There has been an increase in the number of people cycling in France in 2023 according to a French cycling association. The Velos et Territoires association said that there had been a 5% increase in cycling nationwide. During the week and in urban areas, the number of recorded bicycle journeys increased respectively by 7% and 6% compared to 2022. It said that on weekends and in peri-urban and rural areas journeys by bicycle are reaching a plateau.

 

BUSINESS

Electric vehicle maker Tesla has said that it will be suspending much of its production at its manufacturing plant near Berlin for two weeks. The move is because of disruption to parts availability caused by Houti attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. It will affect production from 29 January to 11 February.

The UK economy grew by 0.3% in November, according to the Office for National Statistics. It's slightly more than economists were predicting. It follows a contraction of 0.3% in October. It means that overall in the three months to November, GDP declined by 0.2%.

 

SPORT

Football... Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has been ruled out for a minimum of six weeks because of injury. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described it as "a big blow." The team are facing Manchester City at St James's Park tomorrow. In other Premiership fixtures this weekend, Burnley are at home to Luton Town this evening. Tomorrow, Chelsea play Fulham. On Sunday, Everton are at home to Aston Villa and Manchester United play Tottenham.

Tennis... Jack Draper is through to the final of the Adelaide International after beating eighth seed Alexander Bublik. The final score was 7-6 6-4. He'll face Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the final.
