Evening Update Wednesday 16 August 2023

A heatwave is expected to affect much of France over the coming days. Meteo France have a Yellow warning for heat in place in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes from midday to at least midnight tomorrow. It said that "drier and extremely hot weather" will set in over the country from tomorrow. The first regions to be affected are Occitanie, the Mediterranean and the Rhone Valley. Meteo France said that the heat episode will start mainly from Friday and will last until the beginning of next week with a peak of intensity expected around Monday to Tuesday.

Train services between Nice and Monaco have been disrupted early this evening because of an obstacle on the line at Eze station. There have also been problems with signalling equipment between Nice and Monaco. The SNCF have said that services are expected to gradually return to normal.

A man in his fifties is in a serious condition after a diving accident in Beaulieu-sur-Mer this morning. He was taken to hospital in Nice. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are currently being established.

Five people have been arrested after another fatal shooting in Marseille. According to local reports a man in his twenties died after being shot at point blank range in the 14th arrondissement yesterday evening.

A man in his forties has died in Frejus after the scooter he was riding was involved in a collision. He was apparently not wearing a crash helmet at the time of the accident on avenue du General Norbert Riera.

One person is still missing after a small plane disappeared off the coast of the Loire-Atlantique in western France yesterday. Rescue operations on land and sea, including the use of two helicopters, began yesterday afternoon and continued this morning. Three people are thought to have been on board, including French journalist Gérard Leclerc. Two bodies have so far been recovered, according to local reports.

Today is the second anniversary of the large fire in Gonfaron in the Var which devastated 7,000 hectares. Two people lost their lives, ten thousand people were evacuated from their homes and 1,200 firefighters were involved in fighting the blaze in August 2021.

 

BUSINESS

Inflation in the UK dropped to 6.8% in the year to July from 7.9% in June. It's the second month in a row that inflation has dropped sharply, and is a 15-month low. The latest figure was driven by a reduction in the energy price cap and food costs rising less rapidly. The rising costs of hotels, air travel and rents are amongst sectors keeping inflation high. UK inflation remains high overall compared to many other nations, and well above the Bank of England's target rate of 2%.

Private property rental prices paid by tenants in the UK rose by 5.3% in the 12 months to July, up from 5.2% in the 12 months to June. According to the Office for National Statistics, In England, the highest annual percentage change in private rental prices was in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London, at 5.5%.

 

SPORT

Football... England are through to the Women's World Cup final after beating Australia 3-1. England's goals were scored by Toone, Hemp and Russo and Australia's goal by Kerr. England will be playing Spain in the final on Sunday.

Cricket... Ben Stokes will be part of England's World Cup squad after reversing his decision to retire from one-day international cricket. He's included in the 15-man squad for the series against New Zealand which will also play in the World Cup in October and November. Uncapped Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson is also included.
