Evening Update Wednesday 3rd April 2024

French actor and comedian who starred in Scenes de Menages in 2013 Ary Abittan had his case dismissed on Tuesday in the investigations launched after a woman complained that he raped her in October 2021. The complainant's lawyer, Charlotte Plantin, announced on Wednesday that she would appeal against the dismissal.

The Yonne departement remains under a red alert this Wednesday due to exceptional water levels in certain rivers, with further peaks expected locally in the evening. Three other departments are under orange alert: Haute-Marne, Aube and Côte-d'Or, according to the latest bulletin from Météo-France.

The Rail Pass, which has already been restricted to young people and only during the summer, will not see the light of day in 2024, "unless the presidents of three regions change their minds on Wednesday", announced Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete on franceinfo. This may change, announced Patrice Vergriete, if the three presidents of Normandie, Haut-de France, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes go back on their decision as of today. However, the government remains open to the idea and we will continue to make these proposals for 2025.

BUSINESS

Bernard Arnault, who became the richest man in the world again in March, has become even richer in recent days, according to Bloomberg, thanks to a new calculation method that more accurately measures his stake in LVMH. With assets estimated at $197 billion (€183 billion) on 7 March, he surpassed Jeff Bezos ($196 billion) and Elon Musk ($189 billion). The French billionaire is now credited with assets of $228 billion (€212 billion), the highest level ever recorded.

The online tax return campaign for 2023 will open on Thursday 11 April, according to information from Capital. As in previous years, the deadline for completing the form will depend on your département of residence. Filers in départements 1 to 19 will have until Thursday 23 May to send in their returns, those in départements 2A to 54 until Thursday 30 May, and those in départements 55 to 95 and the overseas departments until Thursday 6 June. Note that paper declarations have until May 20th, however, an online declaration is mandatory if your home is connected to the internet. Some tax households will not necessarily need to complete and return their declaration online. If they are one of the nearly 11 million taxpayers eligible for automatic declaration and their situation has not changed compared to last year, the absence of a response after sending the pre-filled form will constitute validation. However, verification is necessary to avoid any errors.

SPORTS

Rugby Union - Scotland finished fourth in the 2024 competition with two wins - against England and Wales - from five games. Scottish Rugby remains confident Gregor Townsend can improve the national team's Six Nations performances though this year's campaign was "not good enough", according to chairman John McGuigan.

Cycling - British rider Tom Pidcock, who came 11th in the monument Milan-Sanremo in his last race, has withdrawn from the Itzulia Basque Country stage race after crashing on a practice run for the opening individual time trial. Ineos Grenadiers posted on X that Pidcock has been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Cricket - Ben Stokes has ruled himself out of this summer’s T20 world cup so he can focus on his bowling in other formats later on in the year.

American Football - Taylor Swift is proving to be American football's gift that keeps on giving. The global superstar's relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce lured scores of new fans to the USA's National Football League last season. Her presence at the Chiefs' Super Bowl win in February helped make it the most watched ever, with a record number of female viewers. From the UK to Australia, the American singer-songwriter is not just bringing new spectators to the sport, she is inspiring young girls to play it too. And that is helping one of the world's fastest growing sports - flag football - grow even faster before making its Olympic debut.
