Constructed in the 19th century, it was built several decades after the old Lympia, the former name of the port. The square is dominated by the Church of Notre-Dame du Port, and several of its features are classified as historical monuments, including the church, the facades of certain buildings, the arches along the square, and the staircase leading from Place Île de Beauté to Quai Cassini.
