It’s Monaco’s National Day, with several ceremonies and celebrations happening throughout the Principality today. The celebrations will conclude this evening with Bonsoir Monte-Carlo, a gala at the Grimaldi Forum. The Fete du Prince is traditionally an occasion on which Monegasques and residents of Monaco show their attachment to the Prince and his family. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has sent his congratulations to the people of Monaco.  Mr. Rubio said that “for over 169 years, the United States and Monaco have built a robust and enduring partnership founded on mutual respect, shared priorities, and a commitment to prosperity and freedom. The United States values the historic ties between our two countries, and we look forward to developing our friendship in partnership with the Monegasque people and the Government of Monaco”. The National Day was first celebrated in1857 in the reign of Prince Charles III.

Emergency services have used explosives to rescue a hiker from a cave in a major operation in the Var.  The 66-year-old man fell from a height of 7 meters last night, injuring his collarbone and knee. Another caver was able to reach the surface to call for help, while two others remained near the victim about 100 meters underground. A medical team specializing in underground interventions from the Vaucluse Fire and Rescue Service reached the victim. 66 rescue personnel were deployed to the site and explosives were used to widen underground passages. The injured man was brought to the surface this morning. Tree felling was required in order to create a landing zone for a helicopter to transport the victim to hospital.

Police are searching for two people after a motorcycle hit a 15 year old pedestrian in Avignon. The teenager was walking along the ringroad yesterday evening when she was hit by a motorcycle which was performing wheelies and high speed stunts. She was hospitalised with fractures but her life isn’t in danger. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Anti-Crime Brigade officers have arrested an individual allegedly involved in cigarette smuggling in La Seyne-sur-Mer. The Prefecture said that a search of his premises uncovered 86 cartons of cigarettes and 27 grams of cannabis.

The “Taxe Fonciere” property tax is set to increase for several million French households next year. The government has said that an operation to improve the reliability of property tax records will be carried out, to accurately reflect amenities in properties such as bathrooms and electricity.

French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin has revealed that since the beginning of the year, 14 “major drug traffickers” have been arrested and extradited to France from the United Arab Emirates. He said that in the past few days he has also provided his counterparts in the UAE with a list of “highly dangerous drug traffickers” who the French government wishes to be arrested and extradited from the country. Meanwhile, French mayors are calling for more resources to fight drugs trafficking in their local communities. The annual Congress of Mayors is taking place in Paris this week. Delegates are seeking an increase in the number of police officers and are asking for more powers to be given to police.

The president of the Louvre in Paris has said that one hundred security cameras will be installed before the end of next year and a mobile police unit will be created in the grounds of the museum. Speaking before the cultural affairs committee of the National Assembly today, Laurence des Cars said that more than twenty “emergency measures” will be implemented in the next few months. The move comes after a major burglary at the museum last month.
