Police control two-wheel riders in Nice

Police control two-wheel riders in Nice - Local police in Nice have issued 58 fines during a one-hour operation targeting unsafe behaviour among two-wheel riders. Police were present on Tuesday on the Avenue de la République. A total of 69 violations were recorded, including 45 riders using tram tracks, a major safety concern due to the risk of tires getting stuck in rails. Accidents can shut down part of the network and lead to costly claims against the rider.  Offenses also included riding with headphones, doubling up on scooters, lack of insurance, and using tampered scooters exceeding the 25 km/h legal limit. Detecting these modified scooters remains a challenge for officers.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Borré emphasized the need for such checks, citing 2024 figures: 75 scooters seized and over 500 fines for riding in prohibited areas. Early 2025 numbers show little improvement. Borré has launched a petition to require registration of electric scooters, arguing it would help police identify offenders through video surveillance. As a reminder, scooters and bikes must use bike lanes or roads limited to 50 km/h. Riding on tram tracks is forbidden. E-scooters must be insured, and helmets are strongly recommended.
