The trial of the Tunisian man accused of the murder of three people in the Nice Basilica attack is continuing in Paris. Yesterday the families of the victims gave emotional testimony about how their lives had been impacted by the loss of their loved ones. They included the two daughters, aged 28 and 30, of Vincent Loquez, the sacri-stan at the church and the young son of Simone Barreto Silva, a Franco-Brazilian care worker who died in the attack. The accused has told the court that he has no memory of the attacks and has nothing to say. The trial is expected to conclude later this month. 

It’s become mandatory to display the origin of meat in French restaurants. A decree has been published in the Official Journal requiring catering establishments to display certain details as from yesterday, the 19th of February. Establishments are required to indicate “the origin or provenance of meat from pig, sheep and poultry species”. Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard said that it is “a major step forward for consumer confidence and valuable support for our local producers, by promoting our breeding practices and the quality of French products”. 

Police have made arrests after a hold up at a jewellery store in Marseille. Two hooded men walked into the shop in the 5th arrondissement in the centre of the city yesterday morning and escaped with jewellery estimated at a value of 35,000 euros.  

A woman has filed a complaint after her dog was fatally shot in Peille in the Alpes-Maritimes. She was walking her dog in an open space near the village on Monday when the 7 year old wolf dog was hit by two shots. An X-Ray examination later showed that the body of the dog contained about one hundred pellets. An investigation has been opened. 

HSH Prince Albert II has presided over the official signing ceremony of a commemorative plaque of the World Capitals of Sport at the palace in Monaco. Monaco was named the World Capital of Sport for 2025 in December last year. The official signing of the commemorative plaque symbolises Monaco's commitment to the development of sport.  

A new study has shown that mountain ranges in central Europe, mostly consisting of the Alps and Pyrenees, have lost almost 40% of their glacial mass from 2000 to 2023. The study, published in the journal Nature indicates that the mountain ranges have lost 38.7% of their glacial mass, compared to a global average of 5.4%

 

BUSINESS 

Inflation in the UK rose sharply in January, The higher than expected increase in annual inflation to 3% from 2.5% in December was driven by rising food prices, air fares and an increase in private school fees. It’s the highest level of UK inflation for 10 months. 

The US government is reportedly attempting to re-hire officials from the US Department of Agriculture who worked on the government’s response to bird flu before being fired last weekend. A USDA spokesperson told the BBC that although "several" officials working on bird flu were "notified of their terminations" over the weekend, they were “working to swiftly rectify the situation and rescind those letters". It follows the US government recently attempting to re-hire fired employees at a government nuclear weapons agency. 

Defence manufacturer BAE Systems has reported increased revenue and profits as well as an increased order book. Revenue for the year to the end of 2024 was up by 14% while underlying earnings before interest and tax were also up by 14% The company’s orderbook increased by 2.4 billion pounds to just over 60 billion pounds. 

 

SPORT 

Cricket.... New Zealand have won the opening game of the Champions Trophy against Pakistan. New Zealand were victorious by 60 runs with centuries from Tom Latham and Will Young.   

Football.... Real Madrid and England player Jude Bellingham has been banned for two Spanish La Liga matches following his red card in a club match at the weekend. He was sent off for foul and abusive language towards the referee. The Spanish Football Federation ruled yesterday that Bellingham should be punished for what it described as "attitudes of contempt or lack of consideration towards referees". 

Rugby Union...Warren Gatland says he left his role as Wales head coach after being "weighed down" by criticism, including from former players. Gatland left his role last week following the Six Nations defeat to Italy, a result which saw Wales drop to an all-time low of 12th in rugby's world rankings. Gatland was contracted with Wales until the 2027 World Cup, but left his post by "mutual consent" three days after the defeat.
