Françoise Hardy dies aged 80 - Legendary French singer Françoise Hardy has died aged 80 after a battle with cancer.  Her death was reported by her son, the fellow musician Thomas Dutronc, who wrote “Maman est partie,” (or in English, “mum is gone”) on Instagram alongside a baby photo of himself and Hardy. Hardy had lymphatic cancer since 2004 and had undergone years of radiotherapy and other treatments for the illness. In 2015, she was briefly placed in an induced coma after her condition worsened. In 2021, she had argued in favour of euthanasia, saying that France was “inhuman” for not allowing the procedure. Hardy was born in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1944, and raised in the city, mostly by her mother. Aged 16, she received her first guitar as a present and began writing her own songs, performing them live and auditioning for record labels. In 1961, she signed with Disques Vogue. Hardy became a key part of the yé-yé style that dominated mid-century French music.

Business

Latest figures have shown that the Banque de France has maintained its forecast for gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 0.8% this year, while slightly lowering its outlook for 2025 and 2026. The forecasts however do not take into account the new political context following the European elections. The central bank forecasts an increase in GDP of 1.2% next year and 1.6% in 2026, down slightly compared to its forecasts published in March, of 1.5% and 1.7% respectively. The revisions are due, partly, to the 20 billion euros in savings announced by the French government for this year.

Multi-billionaire Elon Musk has dropped a legal case against OpenAI and its boss Sam Altman. The case had accused them of abandoning the firm's founding mission of developing artificial intelligence (AI) for humanity's benefit. No reason was given by Musk about the withdrawal. The Tesla boss filed the lawsuit against OpenAI at the end of February this year, arguing the company he had helped found in 2015 had deviated from its goals to focus on making money.
