Disruption is expected to local TER train services between Nice and Marseille from tomorrow evening. Industrial action is being taken by employees of Transdev, the company which replaced the SNCF on the line a few months ago. They are protesting over salary and benefits.


Psychological support has been put in place in primary and secondary schools in Mouans-Sartoux following a fatal stabbing on Sunday. A man allegedly attacked his father with a knife in an apartment block in the town. Support has also been offered to residents of the building.


Military police from Bargemon have dismantled a cannabis plantation. They seized 4.5 kg of cannabis and 4 illegal weapons. The alleged grower has been summoned to appear before the court in Draguignan.


There has been an outbreak of avian influenza in wild birds in the Var department. The virus was identified yesterday in a dead bird found in the town of Hyères. The prefect of the Var has issued an order aimed at preventing the outbreak in poultry farms and flocks. A wild bird infection zone has been defined and includes the municipalities of Hyères and Carqueiranne. More details on the Prefecture’s website www.var.gouv.fr


Ski lifts at a resort in the Hautes-Alpes are set to be dismantled because of a lack of sufficient snow and declining visitor numbers over the last few seasons. The village of Ceuze will now concentrate on other activities such as mountain biking, climbing and hiking.


“No Smoking Month” is underway in France. The campaign, which is in its 10th year this year, encourages smokers to stop smoking for the 30 days of November. Participants can register on the  “Mois Sans Tabac" website to benefit from free, personalized support.


Meanwhile, the Monaco government has launched a new lung cancer screening programme aimed at smokers. It will be sending out letters to 50 to 80 year old social security beneficiaries in the Principality. To benefit from the programme, you need to be a smoker or former smoker and to have smoked the equivalent of at least one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years, and not to currently be subject to specific monitoring for lung disease.


The Monaco government has published a guide to the donation of leave from one employee to another in the private sector. The guide covers the practical and legal implications for employees who are the beneficiaries of a donation of leave, those employees who donate, and their employer. A private sector employee in Monaco can benefit from a donation of leave to take care of a sick, disabled or injured child, in the event of the death of a loved one or to help a severely dependent loved one.

 

Business

The Trump administration is heading to the Supreme Court to defend its global tariffs announced in April. Small businesses and a group of states will argue the tariffs are illegal and should be struck down. If the court agrees, the government may have to refund some of the billions of dollars its collected through the charges.

Open AI has signed a 38 billion dollar deal to buy cloud services from Amazon. The move led to Amazon's shares hitting an all-time high yesterday.

Starbucks is to sell control of its China operations to investment firm Boyu Capital. The 4 billion dollar deal comes as Starbucks' market share in China has dropped in recent years - with fierce competition from local chains.

 

Sport

Cameron Norrie takes on another French opponent in the second round of the Moselle Open tennis when he faces Arthur Cazaux this evening. The British number two needed a deciding set to clinch victory against Valentin Royer to progress in Metz.
