Villefranche-sur-Mer Tackles Disappearing Local Shops by Buying Vacant Premises - In Villefranche-sur-Mer, the loss of local businesses has become a growing concern for residents, with many feeling the town is slowly dying off during the winter months. The closure of shops, including supermarkets, banks, and bakeries, has left locals struggling, particularly the elderly who rely on these services. In response, the town hall has acted by acquiring vacant properties, including a former pharmacy, a bank branch, and the old Youth Centre. These spaces will be renovated and offered for rental to new businesses. The goal is to revitalize the commercial landscape by choosing businesses that cater to the specific needs of the community. Despite the town’s real estate market thriving with 18 agencies for just 5,000 residents, the mayor expressed concerns about the oversaturation of real estate offices. The town's efforts to diversify the commercial offering aims to bring essential services back to the area, hoping to make Villefranche-sur-Mer a more vibrant and self-sufficient town.

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok, with the President suggesting there’s significant interest in the app from multiple parties. Trump has expressed a desire for a “bidding war” over the social media platform, which has been embroiled in national security concerns due to its Chinese ownership. Trump’s administration has pushed for TikTok to be sold, citing security risks. Trump has previously stated that discussions with several companies, including Microsoft, were ongoing. While Microsoft has remained tight-lipped about the deal, other potential buyers include Oracle and even YouTube star MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), who expressed interest in acquiring the platform. Trump expects to make a final decision within the next 30 days.

DeepSeek, an AI-powered chatbot developed by the Chinese tech company DeepSeek, has taken the tech world by storm, becoming the most downloaded free app on Apple’s store just after its January release in the US. The app’s rapid rise has sparked both excitement and concern in the financial markets. Silicon Valley venture capitalist Marc Andreessen has called DeepSeek “one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs” in AI, highlighting its potential to disrupt the industry. What’s making DeepSeek particularly noteworthy is its cost-effectiveness. The company claims that its latest AI models rival those of industry giants like ChatGPT but at a fraction of the cost. DeepSeek’s development reportedly only required $6 million, a stark contrast to the billions invested by US-based AI companies. The app's success and its affordability are raising eyebrows in both the tech and investment worlds, challenging the dominance of US AI firms and setting a new benchmark for AI development.

Sport

Football – The Premier League is splashing the cash this January, with clubs already spending a massive £247 million, a big jump from last year’s £90 million. And with a week still to go in the transfer window, that total could rise even further. Manchester City alone has spent around £125 million – that’s more than all 19 other Premier League clubs combined. While the spending’s been huge, we’re still a long way from the record-breaking £815 million the league spent in January 2023. Over in France, Ligue 1 is the second-biggest spender this month, with £106 million spent.

Rugby - In a bid to lift the mood around Welsh rugby, Warren Gatland has brought in a familiar face – cult hero Adam Jones. Jones, who’s currently with English club Harlequins, has been given a special temporary role to link up with the Wales squad, starting with a tough opening match against France in Paris this Friday night. Jones’ arrival comes at a time when Welsh rugby could really use a boost, and many fans will be hoping his expertise can help steer Wales in the right direction.

Cycling - Cycling's world governing body, the UCI, is set to vote this week on a ban for carbon monoxide rebreathing equipment. Last year, it was revealed that some teams had been using this method to measure haemoglobin levels in riders' blood before and after altitude training. While there’s nothing in the rules explicitly banning it, concerns have been raised about its potential to enhance performance if used repeatedly, or whether it’s simply too dangerous to inhale a deadly gas as a measurement tool. The decision to ban it seems clear-cut, but there’s growing confusion in the sport about what such a ban will actually mean. The UCI is reportedly considering allowing the use of this equipment in a "medical setting," which has left some wondering where the line will be drawn.
