Man arrested following knife attack on soldier - French police have arrested a man following a knife attack on a soldier who was patrolling the Gare de L’Est in Paris. The incident occurred on Monday the victim has been hospitalised. His life is not in danger. According to France’s minister of the Interior the suspect was already known for murder in a case dating back to 2018. Claiming to be a Christian he shouted, “God is great” during the attack and claims to have acted “because soldiers are killing people in his country”. Born in the Republic of Congo, the man arrested is of French nationality and was naturalized in 2006. Following the attack France’s Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu gave his support and recognition to the victim for ensuring the security of the French.

Stalemate situation for new left-wing collation - In other news, a week after the parliamentary elections in France it would appear that the new left wing coalition party, which gained the most seats in the national assembly, is unable to agree on a new Prime Minister. The fragile unity within the New Popular Front the (NFP) was fractured on Monday when France Unbowed (LFI) accused the Socialist party (PS) of “unacceptable methods” in vetoing suggestions over who should lead any new administration. The rift comes at the start of a crucial week in which the government will resign, and new MPs will vote on Thursday to appoint a new president of the national assembly.

Extreme heat in French schools is becoming a very real problem - A report carried out by Oxfam has denounced the lack of preparation of French schools for periods of extreme heat which are becoming all too familiar in our region. The NGO recommends implementing a much more ambitious and effective policy in schools to protect children, who are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures. Based on a study by the EcoAct firm, Oxfam reveals that, by 2030, 7,138 nursery schools, with 1.3 million students, could be exposed in class to heat exceeding 35°C. Heads of establishments across France  have recommended to France’s National Education ministry to "adapt the organization and use of spaces to protect pupils from the heat", ensuring that blinds and shutters are closed on sunny facades, or if a room is air-conditioned, to "use it as a refuge room." One initiative introduced in In Montélimar in the Drôme has been to change the school timetable. Since June 3rd, three schools in the city started school earlier and ended earlier at 3 p.m.

Luxury luggage stolen at Nice airport - Two young United Arab Emirates tourists have had their baggage stolen at Nice international Airport. Three suitcases containing more than a million euros worth of luxury clothing, watches and jewellery were stolen on Saturday morning. The two tourists aged 26 and 33 had left their luggage in the care baggage porters only to discover that once arriving at the boarding gate three of their suitcases had disappeared. An investigation has been opened and entrusted to the border police to find the perpetrators of a rather unusual theft.

Scam targeting parking meters in Nice - Police in Nice have warned motorist of a new scam targeting parking meters in the city. The scam involves fake QR Codes being placed on parking meters. The fake QR Codes imitate the PayByPhone application, allowing you to pay for parking with your mobile phone communicating personal bank details. The advice is to look closely at the website on the QR Code which should read “paybyphone.fr” and not “pbp-payer.info”. The real PayByPhone app can only be downloaded from official platforms like Apple Store and Google Play.

“Dial a drug” business on the Riviera unmasked by police - Police have arrested three young people in Nice after they were found to have set up a home delivery service for drugs, such as cannabis and cocaine. Investigators ended what had become a very lucrative business here on the Riviera set up via WhatsApp. All three in their mid-twenties delivered to homes from Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to Cannes and from Antibes to Grasse. The case will be judged at the end of July by the criminal court. In the meantime, the prosecution has requested that the three defendants be placed in pre-trial detention.

City of Nice plans to curb Airbnb rentals - The city of Nice has voted in favour of tougher regulations to curb Airbnb rentals. The city’s council unanimously accepted proposals for new regulations on Monday regarding short-term rentals of furnished tourist accommodation. According to a study commissioned by the City of Nice, 6% of housing in city is furnished. More than in Paris and Marseille. One of the proposals would be to “reduce the temporary authorisations from 6 years to just one year”.  

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco shows support following assassination attempt - HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco has released an official statement addressed to the President of the United States Joe Biden in the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Prince Albert wished Mr Trump a “swift and full recovery” adding that “political violence is absolutely unacceptable and has no place in our society”, before concluding that “our hearts and prayers are with the families of the innocent victim and those who have been injured”.

No Finish Line 2023 - The proceeds from the No Finish Line 2023 have been donated to various projects supported in favour of sick and disadvantaged children in Monaco, France and internationally. The 24th No Finish Line (NFL) took place from November 11th to 19th. The event mobilized 10,428 participants covering 315,561 km. A distance transformed into euros donated by the Children & Future association to finance various projects in favour of sick or disadvantaged children. The amount collected was used to support 36 projects in the Principality and France but also in Europe, Africa and Asia. Since the start of the No Finish Line in Monaco, more than 185,000 people have come to run or walk and have covered more than 4,800,000 km. More than 5 million euros were collected and donated to various associations that work with children. The next edition of this humanitarian race will take place from November 16th to 24th.

Business

After survived an assassination attempt on Saturday shares in Donald Trump's social media company have surged. Trump Media, which runs the Truth Social platform, closed up about 31%. The price had risen as much as 70% in pre-market trading over the weekend before falling back again. Analysts said the gains reflected bets that the shooting had improved Mr Trump's chances of winning the US presidential election in November.

The boss of fashion brand Burberry has been ousted as sales continue to fall.  A change of leadership has taken place after the company reported a sharp fall in sales, hit by a downturn in demand for luxury goods, particularly in China. The company said it was looking at cutting jobs and that if current trends continue its profits will be below expectations. Burberry - famed for its distinctive camel, red and black check pattern - said retail revenues fell by 21% in the three months to 29 June.

And – Electric car manufacture Tesla has announced a delay in the presentation of its “robotaxi”. The driverless vehicle was due to be introduced at the beginning of August, but more time is needed, and it now looks more likely to be in October. In response, Tesla shares fell almost 7% on Wall Street, interrupting a continuous rise. The development of the robotaxi has encountered some pitfalls in the past, particularly related to concerns from authorities and the public over safety.

Sport

Football - Thousands of fans have joined street celebrations in Madrid after Euro 2024 champions Spain returned home to a royal welcome. Spain beat England 2-1 in Sunday's final in Berlin to win their record fourth European crown.

Rugby Union – England’s Coach Kevin Sinfield is set to remain part of team despite initially planning to leave his role this summer. England head coach Steve Borthwick is hopeful he will now stay on the staff in some capacity.

Tennis - Jack Draper, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans, Britain's leading three men's players, have been named in the Davis Cup team for the group stage in Manchester in September. Drawn in Group D, Britain face Finland on 11 September. A Britain team that included three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray reached the quarter-finals last year. They last won the Davis Cup in 2015.
