Fires in the Gironde - Firefighters continue to battle blazes in the Gironde south of Bordeaux. The Gironde is facing two fires, one of which is the largest in the department for twenty years. 2,800 hectares have been destroyed and more than 6,500 people have been evacuated, nearly 600 firefighters have been deployed. At this stage, there are no injuries or homes affected, according to the president of the department.

Heatwave - Meanwhile Météo France has warned that the current heat wave in France will last until the beginning of next week. This weekend the north of France is set to be heading for a “fairly intense heat peak which isn’t expected to last” while the south of the country will be subject to "intense and lasting" heat. Maximum temperatures will remain high with 36°C in Montpellier, 35°C in Toulouse, 34°C in Bordeaux, 29°C in Rennes, 26°C in Metz, and even 28°C in Brest. In Paris, Météo France expects 27°C. The 40°C mark could be reached locally in the Southwest.

“The Angel of the bay” - The July 14 memorial work “The Angel of the bay” will be unveiled today Thursday 14 July, during the ceremony in tribute to the victims of the Nice attack. The 4-meter-high sculpture, created by the Nice artist Jean-Marie Fondacaro, was chosen by the families of the victims.

July 14th - The July 14th military parade will take place on the Champs-Elysées in Paris today in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron. This year, the theme is "Share the flame", in reference to the flame at the foot of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and that of the 2024 Olympic Games, in the French capital. Nine Eastern European countries have been invited to parade, at the head of the troops on foot. The ceremony starts at 9.30am and runs until midday after which Macron will give his first interview since his re-election to France 2 and TF1 at 1.10pm.

Hiker rescued by helicopter - Rescue services have intervened after a hiker got into difficulty on the rock of Roquebrune-sur-Argens in the Var. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the women suffered a foot injury while out hiking. She was soon airlifted to hospital by helicopter.

Man injured in garage fire - A man in his sixties has been injured in a fire in Nice. The blaze broke out in a garage on the chemin de Terron, in Nice on Wednesday. Firefighters were quick to intervene and managed to extinguish the fire. The man was taken to hospital suffering from burns.

Monaco Postal Services - Monaco Postal Services has informed customers that all Post Offices in the Principality will be closed today Thursday July 14, 2022, due to the French National Day and public holiday in France. Consequently, the distribution of mail and the collection of mailboxes will not be ensured. From Friday July 15, 2022, the post offices will open at the usual times. The distribution of mail and parcels will also be carried out as normal.

Burger champion takes over kitchens of restaurant in Grimaud - The 2022 French vice burger champion of France has taken over the kitchens of “Le B plage” restaurant in Grimaud in the Var. Antony Barcelona who is self-taught finished 2nd in the competition for the best French burger.

The ride-hailing platform Uber is being sued in the US by 550 women who were allegedly assaulted by drivers. The filing includes allegations that women passengers "were kidnapped, sexually assaulted, sexually battered, raped, falsely imprisoned, stalked, harassed, or otherwise attacked by Uber drivers". The case was filed at a court in San Francisco on Wednesday. Speaking to the BBC an Uber spokesperson said "sexual assault is a horrific crime and we take every single report seriously," adding that while they can't comment on pending litigation, they will continue to keep safety at the heart of their work".

Netflix has teamed up with Microsoft to offer a cheaper subscription plan to customers that will show adverts. The streaming giant says the service will be an "addition" to its existing plans, which do not include adverts. In April, shares in Netflix slumped after it reported its first subscriber loss in more than a decade.

Former bosses of the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant have been ordered to pay 13 trillion yen (£80bn) for failing to prevent a disaster. The bosses from the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) were sued by shareholders over the 2011 meltdown which was triggered by a tsunami. The court judged that the executives could have prevented the accident if they had exercised due care. Tepco apologised but declined to comment on the court case.

Football - The Netherlands have survived a huge scare to defeat Portugal 3-2 and go top of Group C in the Women’s European Championship after an action-packed Euro 2022 encounter on Wednesday night.

And Chelsea have confirmed the signing of England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City in a £50m deal. Sterling, 27, has signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge. City signed Sterling from Liverpool in a £49m deal in 2015. He went on to score 131 goals in 339 games, winning four Premier League titles.

Formula One - Daniel Ricciardo says he is committed to Formula 1 and determined to stay with McLaren to the end of his contract next year. The Australian, is contracted to McLaren until the end of 2023 but has been struggling to match the pace of team-mate Lando Norris this season.
