Over 250 people have been fined at an illegal rave in the Var at the weekend, including for drugs possession and driving without a licence. The Prefecture said that the party, in the village of Tourtour, was in contravention of an order prohibiting unauthorised music gatherings. It said that about 500 party goers had arrived in 200 vehicles on Saturday. Drones were used to monitor the crowd, following a special authorisation from the Prefect, who reminded organisers and participants that they are subject to administrative and criminal sanctions. More than one hundred military personnel were present to ensure that no one drove away from the rave under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the Prefecture.

One person has died and two people have been injured in a plane crash at the weekend. The light aircraft came down in a mountainous area in the Bouche-du-Rhone department on Saturday evening. The pilot was killed in the crash and two passengers in their forties were taken to hospital in Marseille, one of them in a serious condition. An investigation into the cause of the accident has been opened by the Air Transport Gendarmerie.

Two further suspects have been charged in connection with the recent burglary at the Louvre in Paris. They are a 37 year old man and a 38 year old woman. A total of four people are now under formal investigation after three other suspects were released without charge. The stolen jewellery, which is valued at 88 million euros, remains missing.

A pedestrian in his forties has died after being struck by a vehicle on the Chemin de Sainte Marguerite in Grasse. The driver fled the scene but reportedly later turned himself in to police.

A man in his sixties has died in Mouans-Sartoux after being attacked with a knife. The Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes said that it was a “family tragedy”. A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

A teenager has been convicted of involvement in a credit card fraud scheme by the criminal court in Grasse. Victims received a telephone call to tell them to return their credit card to their bank and the 19 year old turned up to collect the cards. He received a sentence of 12 months house arrest with an electronic tag. 

The border road at sea level between Menton and Ventimiglia is being closed for four months starting today. Major road and tunnel works are being carried out on the Italian side, with the road set to reopen at the end of February. In the meantime, it will still be possible to cross to Italy on the small road which rises above the seafront or on the motorway.

The Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo has been ranked among the World’s 50 Best Hotels. The third edition of the World’s 50 Best Hotels ceremony was held in London and brought together leading professionals from the luxury hospitality and tourism industries. The hotel, which first opened its doors in 1864, was completely renovated in 2020 after six years of work.

Charles Leclerc has announced his engagement to Alexandra Saint Mieux. The Monegasque Formula 1 driver announced the news on an Instagram post with a photo featuring the couple and their dog Leo.

Borrowers will see their credit score take account of rental payments for the first time. Experian's carrying out a major overhaul to better reflect how applications are assessed by lenders. It's estimated more than 40 per cent of people will drop down a banding after the changes.

Donald Trump has said Nvidia's top AI chips will be supplied to US companies only. The company previously stated it would supply the Blackwell superchips to South Korea. The US President faced criticism earlier this year when he hinted at selling scaled-down chips to China.

Women are less likely than men to be happy discussing their finances with friends. Research shows 18- to 34-year-olds are also more comfortable about it than the over 55s.

 

Sport

Jannik Sinner is men's world tennis number one again after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the Paris Masters. Cam Norrie is in action at the Moselle Open today, as he takes on Valentin Royer in the first round. Jacob Fearnley plays Damir Dzumhur in his opening match at the Hellenic Championship in Athens.

AS Monaco lost their Ligue 1 game against Paris FC over the weekend. It keeps them at 5th in the table. It was also a defeat for OGC Nice on Saturday, with PSG winning 1-nil.

India are Women's Cricket World Cup champions for the first time after beating South Africa by 52 runs in the final. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur took the winning catch as they bowled their opponents out with just under five overs remaining.
