French President starts visit in Marseille today - French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that fines for possession or consumption of cannabis "can be paid immediately", by credit card or cash. In an interview with the daily newspaper, La Provence, the Head of State announced that 5,000 payment terminals will be available by the end of this year.

Macron begins a three-day trip today Monday 26th June, to Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). The head of state addressed drug trafficking related issues in Marseille and notably his concern for the lack of fines collected for those that are found to be in possession or consume cannabis. Macron is expected to speak of security-related measures during his trip.

Smoke from fires in Canada to reach France - Smoke from the fires in Canada is expected to reach France today Monday 26th June. More than 100 million Americans have already been affected by an air quality alert in early June due to the fires. Now smoke from the fires which have ravaged part of Canada has crossed the Atlantic are expected to reach Europe and France in the coming days, according to simulations from the European centre for medium-range weather forecasts. In Canada, more than 4.6 million hectares of forest have been destroyed by the flames and tens of thousands of people have had to be evacuated in recent weeks.

60-year-old man saved after nearly drowning in private pool - A 60-year-old man has been saved after nearly drowning in a private swimming pool in Antibes. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at around 6.30pm on Boulevard Pierre Delmas in the west of the city. Found lifeless at the bottom of a swimming pool by a member of his family, it was witnesses present at the time, who managed to save his life. Later taken care of by emergency services he was taken to hospital for observation.  In the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes, since 2020 there have been around fifteen accidental drownings in private swimming pools with young children being the main victims.

Level 1 alert for air pollution - The prefect of Var has triggered the level 1 alert procedure for poor air quality in the region from today, Monday 26th June.  The health recommendations concern vulnerable people and include avoiding intense physical or sporting outdoor activities. Train service - It’s been announced that the "metropolitan RER" train services will circulate between Cannes and Monaco every fifteen minutes from the summer of 2025. The new improved services for the region will see sixteen new trains purchased for 250 million euros.

Nice Ironman - Clément Mignon has won the Ironman in Nice. The triathlete, who has been living in Nice for almost three years, completed the 3.8 km swim, 180 km of cycling and 42.195 km of running in 8h17h'40". The last French victory dates back 18 years ago in 2005 when Hervé Faure won the first ever edition.

Business

According to a report published today by the NGO Oxfam, large French companies have failed to invest in “energy transition” and show an “imbalance in the sharing of profits, favouring shareholders more than their employees”. Oxfam denounces what they call a “disconnection” calling for a reassessment in the payment of dividends as well as "a more ambitious climate strategy”.

The Chief executive of Southeast Water in the UK, David Hinton has blamed people working from home for a news hosepipe ban. The ban which comes into effect from today Monday 26th June will affect more than two million homes and businesses across Kent and Sussex. Hinton in a letter to customers said that post-pandemic working from home was a “key factor” behind the ban, as it had increased drinking water demand.

Strike action from security staff at Heathrow Airport has been called off after a vote on a new proposal from Heathrow. Union members had been planning to walk out nearly every weekend until the end of August but with a new offer now accepted action has come to a halt. The deal is the equivalent to an increase of between 15.5 and 17.5% depending on staff pay bands.

Tennis - Carlos Alcaraz has won his first title on grass and regained the world number one ranking with an impressive victory over Alex de Minaur in the Queen's final. Alcaraz's 6-4 6-4 triumph means he moves above Novak Djokovic in the rankings and will be the top men's seed at Wimbledon, which starts on 3 July.

Football - Lionel Messi has said that his relationship with Paris St-Germain fans has been "fractured" after a "significant" number of supporters started to treat him differently. Messi, who won the World Cup with Argentina in December, left PSG at the end of last season after two years and has joined Inter Miami.

Cycling - England's Fred Wright paid an emotional tribute to late team-mate Gino Mader after winning his first British National Road Championship title. Wright, 24, attacked late in the 189km contest and tearfully pointed to the sky as he crossed the line.

Going down to 19 degrees inland in the Var this evening, with clear skies. 29 degrees in Monaco and Nice. 30 degrees in Cannes. Showers are forecast inland in the Alpes Maritimes this afternoon in Tende and Puget Theniers. This evening going down to 17 degrees inland and 22 degrees along the Riviera coast with clear skies.

The outlook for tomorrow and Wednesday. Tuesday remaining fine in the Var and the Alpes Maritimes highs of between 28-32 degrees. Wednesday sunny intervals highs of 27 degrees. Thundery showers are forecast for Nice by the end of the week on Thursday and Friday.
