Monaco to invest in trains to improve services - Monaco has announced plans to increase the number of regional trains. The move comes as part of a major step forward in its regional transport plans to tackle ongoing issues of congestion and reliability. The 36 million euros investment will see the purchase of two new TER trains, in additional to the fleet of five, previously purchased in 2008 and set to be operational in 2028. The new trains, each with 500 seats, will increase the principality’s transport capacity. Passenger traffic through Monaco’s station has skyrocketed from just 3 million users in 1999, to 8.1 million passengers recorded in 2023 alone. This sharp increase has strained existing infrastructure, often resulting in service disruptions and equipment breakdowns. A report from the consumer association UFC Que Choisir recently ranked the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region, which includes Monaco, as having some of the worst train punctuality in France, with only 84.7% of TER trains arriving on time in 2023. Starting in December, the region will see more changes with the introduction of a train every 15 minutes between Cannes, Nice, and Menton, aiming for a 98% punctuality rate.

Business

Asia shares have dipped in and out of positive territory on under pressure from weakness in Chinese stocks, however, bitcoin scaled a three-month peak as "Trump trades" continued to ramp up enthusiasm. Gold hit another record high due to the conflict in the Middle East and an extremely close upcoming US presidential election. With just about two weeks to go before the election, bets that a Donald Trump victory are on rise in some financial instruments.

Meanwhile, from now until the US presidential election on November the 5th, billionaire Elon Musk has said he will give away $1m a day to a registered voter in key swing states. The winner will be chosen at random from those who sign a pro-US Constitution petition by Mr Musk’s campaign group AmericaPAC, which he set up to support Republican nominee Donald Trump's bid to return to the White House. The first lottery-style cheque was given away to a surprised attendee at a town hall event in Pennsylvania on Saturday night. Another cheque was handed out on Sunday. Election law expert Rick Hasen says he believes Mr Musk's offer was "clearly illegal". But the strategy may be covered by a loophole under US election law because no-one is being directly paid to vote, despite introducing money into a process that could identify likely Trump voters. In the US, it is illegal to provide payments to get people to vote - not only for a certain candidate, but to simply cast a ballot.
