Inquiry into the psychological effects of TikTok launched by France - The French National Assembly has launched a commission of inquiry into the psychological effects of TikTok, specifically focusing on whether the app encourages suicide and self-harm or amplifies the availability of hypersexualized content that could lead to mental health issues. The inquiry, approved on Thursday by MPs, will investigate the app’s impact on children and adolescents, with concerns about its widespread use by children under 13, despite the platform's age restrictions. Laure Miller, an MP and advocate for the inquiry, highlighted TikTok's policies and the app's popularity in France, where it has more than 15 million monthly users. The commission could last up to six months and will review findings, including a 2022 US study suggesting that distressed young users were shown, on average, twelve times more content about suicide and self-harm. In response, TikTok launched a new feature in the EU on Tuesday, allowing parents to limit their teenagers' screen time on the app. The company stated it would wait to see the specific topics the commission seeks to address, noting that the issues raised are not unique to TikTok.

NASA claims sea levels rose more than expected last year - According to NASA sea levels rose more than expected in 2024. The U.S. space agency, which tracks sea level rise using satellite imagery, reported a rise of 0.59 centimetres, exceeding the predicted 0.43 centimetres. This increase was driven by unusual ocean warming combined with the melting of glaciers. NASA highlighted that the ocean's rise continues, and the rate is accelerating. Over the past three decades, from 1993 to 2023, the average global sea level has risen by 10 centimetres. This phenomenon is primarily due to the melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, which add freshwater to the ocean, and the expansion of seawater as it heats up. Rising sea levels are a consequence of climate change, which is driven by human activities and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions.

Building in Nice evacuated due to the risk of collapse – Locally, a building in the port district of Nice has had to be urgently evacuated due to the risk of collapse, following an expert report. The evacuation was carried out on Thursday and managed by the City of Nice as well as emergency services. The building, located at 16 rue Emmanuel Philibert, was deemed at risk after a report from a technical studies office indicated that a pillar could collapse due to a water leak. Seventeen apartments are affected, with 13 households being rehoused. Two neighbouring buildings, including one at number 15, were also evacuated for safety, although only the building at number 16 is in immediate danger. A security perimeter has been established around the site, and parking has been temporarily prohibited. The City of Nice is overseeing the emergency response, with efforts underway to provide alternative accommodation for affected residents.

New signs for bad habits in Nice - New signs have been appearing around the city of Nice to warn residents and visitors about the high fines for bad behaviours such as not picking up dog mess, littering, and throwing cigarette butts on the ground. Despite such action being banned they still continue which has led to the signs to serve as a reminder that these behaviours can lead to hefty fines. For example, throwing a cigarette butt or not picking up your dog’s mess can cost up to 450 euros, while littering can result in a fine of up to 1,500 euros. This campaign, which started in 2019, is part of a broader effort to keep the city clean, with more police officers will be added in 2025 to help enforce these rules.

Road safety operation in Roquebrune Cap Martin - This week a road safety operation in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin gave some lucky drivers a break. During the operation, around 58 drivers who had violated traffic laws—such as speeding, using a phone, or crossing a solid line—avoided fines by attending awareness workshops instead. These drivers participated in sessions on "road hazards," with some even using a simulator. In total, 71 drivers were stopped for violations, but 58 were allowed to leave without penalties or points on their licenses. However, drivers with more serious offenses had their vehicles immobilized and were fined. The operation also involved local police from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Menton, along with the road safety office of the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture. This initiative is part of regular traffic checks aimed at improving road safety, which have seen a positive trend in 2025, with a drop in fatal accidents compared to last year.

Minister Christophe Robino highlighted the AI's potential in predictive medicine, reinforcing Monaco's commitment to advanced healthcare.

The President of the United States Donald Trump has warned the European Union that he will impose a 200% tariff on its alcohol, including wine and champagne, if the bloc imposes duties on US whiskey. In a social media post, Trump criticized the EU, calling it "one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the world" and claimed it was created to exploit the United States. He threatened that if the EU’s 50% tariff on whiskey is not removed immediately, the US would impose the 200% tariff on all wines, champagnes, and alcoholic products from France and other EU countries. This was in response to the European Commission’s pledge to reinstate suspended tariffs on US goods, targeting items worth €26 billion starting on 1 April. These retaliatory measures follow the US's imposition of steel and aluminium duties.

Every McDonald's in Britain has been warned that its owners could face legal action if they fail to protect staff from sexual abuse. The equality watchdog sent a letter to all 1,400 branches, stressing the need to comply with legal duties to prevent sexual harassment or face enforcement action. The move follows a BBC investigation that revealed a toxic culture of sexual assault and harassment. In January, McDonald's workers revealed that they continued to face sexual harassment, more than a year after the CEO promised to address the issue. McDonald's has stated that it is "committed" to ensuring a safe working environment for all employees.

Joe Roberts, making his first professional start, replaces the injured Tom Rogers on the wing. The French, fresh off a stunning win over Ireland in round four, are in a strong position to claim the Six Nations title. A victory over Scotland at the Stade de France will secure the championship for them.

Townsend highlighted the difficulty of facing the French at home, noting their dynamic and high-scoring style of play, even in defeat, as seen in their close loss to England at Twickenham. He praised France's physicality and their ability to bring fresh power off the bench, making them formidable opponents in the title decider. The match kicks off at 9pm French time.

The tensions between PSG and Mbappé, which began in June 2023 when the player announced he would not extend his contract, have added to the high-stakes atmosphere surrounding the game.
