A stash of weapons has been discovered at Nice train station. The discovery of a gun and several knives was apparently made by a traveller yesterday. They were reportedly partially hidden in the false ceiling of the station toilets. The area around the toilets was cordoned off by police but train services were not affected.

October was an exceptionally wet month according to Meteo France. It said that October was marked by very heavy rains, particularly in the South-East. Nationwide, the excess rainfall amounted to 40% compared to normal levels recorded between 1991 and 2020. September was an even wetter month, with excess rainfall amounting to 60%.

The Monaco government is today launching a lung cancer screening campaign. The campaign will be open to social security beneficiaries in the Principality aged over 50. The data collected during this campaign will also make it possible to collect data on lung cancer across the entire population and to adapt prevention and treatment policies in the Principality. A letter will be sent to all social security beneficiaries in Monaco aged over 50 so that all those concerned can be screened free of charge using a lung scan.

Traffic diversions are in place this Sunday along the coast between Nice and Cannes for the Alpes-Maritimes Marathon. In Nice the Pomenade des Anglais from the old town to the airport will be closed during the morning, as will many roads which have junctions with the Promenade des Anglais. Roads along the route are also being closed in Villeneuve Loubet, St Laurent du Var, Cagnes sur Mer, Antibes and Cannes for much of the day.

A student associated with Aix-Marseille University has been detained by military authorities in Tunisia. He was visiting the country to carry out research as part of his studies, according to the university. He is accused of endangering state security. The university has said that French diplomatic services are involved in negotiations for his release.

A “limited traffic zone” is being established in parts of central Paris. A decree was issued yesterday meaning that it will not be possible to cross the first four arrondissements by car unless drivers have business in the zone. There are certain exceptions, for example motorists living or working in the area and people with reduced mobility. The zone covers an area of just over five square kilometres.

 

BUSINESS

EU greenhouse gas emissions fell by more than 8% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the European Commission’s latest Climate Action Progress Report. According to the Commission, this is “the largest annual decline in decades”, with the exception of 2020 when COVID-19 led to a 9.8% reduction in emissions. Net emissions are now 37% below 1990 levels.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has announced a large increase in quarterly revenues. It posted more than 200bn yuan (that’s about $28.2bn) in revenues in the July to September quarter. It’s a 24% increase from the same period last year. It’s a greater quarterly revenue than Tesla but the American company still sold more electric vehicles than BYD in the third quarter.

The European Commission has opened formal proceedings against Chinese shopping site Temu. The Commission said that it aims to assess if the company may have breached the Digital Services Act. It said it was looking into areas linked to the possible sale of illegal products, the potentially addictive design of the service, the systems used to recommend purchases to users, as well as data access for researchers.

A man in his sixties has been arrested after 22 tons of cheese, worth more than £300,000, were stolen from London cheese seller Neal’s Yard Dairy. Fraudsters posing as legitimate wholesalers received the 950 clothbound cheeses from the Southwark-based company which manufactured the cheeses before it was realised they were a fake firm.

 

SPORT

Cricket… Jos Buttler has extended his central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board by a year. He is already one year into his existing two year deal. He joins Test skipper Ben Stokes in signing until the autumn of 2026.

Rugby Union… Beauden Barrett has been picked ahead of Damian McKenzie at fly-half for New Zealand's match against England at Twickenham on Saturday. Jordie Barrett is back from injury and will be playing in midfield. Tamaiti Williams is one of only three players to keep their places from the side which played against Japan recently.

Football… Manager of Portugese side Sporting, Ruben Amorim, has said that there will be "clarification" over his expected move to Manchester United after Sporting's game against Estrela today. There remains confusion over whether a deal has actually been completed for Amorim to take over at Old Trafford. Amorim said "It's a negotiation between two clubs, it's never easy".
