Nice mayor Christian Estrosi said that, faced with the sharp increase in the flu epidemic, people should be extremely vigilant by respecting barrier gestures. In a post on social media he said that all Nice residents over 75 years old can be vaccinated in the center in Hancy, or at home by contacting 04 92 17 44 90 if they cannot travel. ⁠According to the mayor, it is now mandatory for staff and visitors to wear masks at the three EHPAD care homes and three independent living residences of the Nice CCAS, as well as in all the city's municipal administrative sites in the event of symptoms. Hydro-alcoholic gel and masks are being distributed in all Nice municipal services.

Protesting farmers blocked a retail distribution facility in the Var this morning. Farmers from our region demonstrated at a logistics depot in Luc-en-Provence. They are protesting at free trade agreements and want to see guaranteed minimum prices paid to farmers for their produce.

The month of December saw a decrease in road deaths in the Alpes-Maritimes department compared to December 2023, according to departmental road safety authorities. In December 2024, two people lost their lives, compared with five in the previous December. However, the number of people seriously injured rose significantly, from 17 in December 2023 to 30 in December 2024.

Firefighters were called to a house in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin this afternoon. Reports say that the fire may have been the result of a gas leak.

The body of a woman in her thirties has been discovered in an apartment in the Essonne department in northern France. Reports say that police were called by concerned neighbors last night. A man in his twenties was arrested at the scene. Two children in the apartment were taken to safety by authorities.

 

BUSINESS

Consumers in the UK spent more on recorded music in 2024 than ever before, according to newly released data which showed spending of £2.4 billion. The previous high was £2.2bn, which was at the peak of CD sales in 2001. The biggest-selling album of the year last year was Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department while Noah Kahan had the year's biggest single in monetary terms with Stick Season .

The number of electric chargers for vehicles in the UK in public places was up by 37% last year from the year before, according to the Department for Transport. Just over 73,000 devices were installed as at 1 January. The figure is up from just over 53,000 a year earlier.

 

SPORT

Motorsports....The Belgian Grand Prix has secured a new contract that means it will be on the Formula 1 calendar for four out of six years from 2026-2031. It represents a new type of deal for Formula 1 which is trying to accommodate new events in its calendar. Under the new deal, the Belgian Grand Prix will take place in 2026, 2027, 2029 and 2031, with the venues for 2028 and 2030 yet to be announced.

Cricket... Archie Vaughan is set to lead England's Under-19s during their upcoming tour of South Africa. Archie is the son of former England captain Michael Vaughan. The team will play three youth one-day internationals and two youth Tests against South Africa Under-19s, starting on 17 January.

Football... West Ham have sacked manager Julen Lopetegui. He was due to speak to the media this morning before the club's FA Cup match against Aston Villa on Friday, but the media session was canceled by the club. He's been in the job just six months.
