Evening Update Wednesday 5 June

A building in Beausoleil was evacuated after a fire broke out in an apartment this afternoon.  Fourteen firefighters from Monaco tackled the blaze on rue des Martyrs de la Resistance. One person was treated at the Princess Grace hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation. Seven people are being temporarily rehoused by the municipality of Beausoleil as a result of the fire.

A major industrial fire destroyed the warehouse of a company in Annot in the Alpes de Haute-Provence last night. Thirty pompiers and ten fire fighting appliances fought the fire in which the 500 square metre building was destroyed. The fire was brought under control and extinguished in the early hours of this morning.  No injuries were reported.

A special Fan Zone is being set up in Nice for the Women’s Football World Cup.  The area, which will be inaugurated at 3pm this Friday, is located in the gardens of the kiosque Albert Ier. Fans will be able to watch the games on big screens and get information about the tournament.

A safer drugs use room is set to open in Marseille next year according to local reports. The room would be the third to open in France, the others being in Paris and Strasbourg.  The rooms allow drug users to take drugs in a safe and clean environment with sterile equipment and in the presence of medical staff.  The room will be located in the premises of the Conception Hospital but the plans are subject to the approval of the French Health Ministry.

The 24th edition of the Voiles d'Antibes is getting underway today. The event includes a regatta and a village which is free to visit. The event is on until Sunday.

Air France has announced that it will replace all single use plastic items on it’s flights by the end of this year. Items such as single use plastic cups will be replaced by sustainable alternatives on all its flights.


BUSINESS

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have announced they are planning to work together to develop electric car technologies.  The companies said that they will save costs through shared research and production planning, and by jointly buying electric car components.

In an interview today, French economy minister Bruno Le Maire has reiterated that he welcomes the proposed merger of Renault and Fiat Chrysler but wanted guarantees concerning jobs, corporate governance and the location of he new firm's headquarters.

Another survey of purchasing managers in the UK has been released by IHS Markit.  The survey of purchasing managers in the services sector came in at 50.4 in April. A figure above 50 indicates growth.


SPORT

Cricket...It’s South Africa against India in Southampton in the World Cup match. South Africa batted first and got  227 - for 9.

And Bangladesh are playing New Zealand at the Oval.

Football..Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as president of football's world governing body Fifa for a second term. He was re-elected until 2023 without opposition at Fifa's annual congress in Paris.

The first semi-final in the Nations League is being played tonight. Portugal play Switzerland. England play the Netherlands in the second-semi final tomorrow.
