Evening Update Wednesday 17 July

Meteo France are forecasting another heatwave for next week.  They say that the temperature will begin to climb for the whole of France as of this weekend, because of a flow of hot air from Spain. At the beginning of next week, the temperatures will reach between 30 and 35 in the northern half of France and between 35 and 39, occasionally 40 degrees, from the South-West to the Center-East and Languedoc to Provence. At the moment, Meteo France say that the duration and geographic extent of the heatwave remain to be monitored.

A fire has broken out in a building in Le Cannet this afternoon. The blaze started in the refuse collection room of the residence Victor Hugo in Vieux-Cannet. More than 30 pompiers from Mougins, Cannes and Grasse brought the fire under control.

A motorcyclist is in a serious condition after an accident in Mougins this morning.  His motorcycle collided with an 82 year old man on Avenue Marechal-Juin.  He was slightly injured but the motorcyclist was rushed to Simone Veil Hospital in a serious condition.

A fund has been started to provide financial assistance for the child who was struck by lightening on the beach at Golfe Juan recently and who left hospital yesterday. It’s been opened online by the track and field club l'Esperance in Antibes. Several hundred euros has already been raised. 

An elderly man has been taken to hospital after becoming ill while swimming at the Salis beach in Antibes this lunchtime. He was rescued by lifeguards and other swimmers before being treated by pompiers and taken to the Fontonne Hospital. Meanwhile, a woman in her seventies was rescued from just off the Beau-Rivage beach in Nice this morning after apparently suffering a heart attack whilst swimming.

Trades Unions have called for a day of industrial action at the emergency room of the Pasteur Hospital in Nice tomorrow. Union members are striking because of assaults on staff, and what they claim are low wages and insufficient staff levels.

Two people have died after their glider crashed in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. An extensive search took place involving a civil security helicopter of the Alpes-Maritimes and the victims were located in an inaccessible area near Valernes in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Both were in their sixties, one from Belgium and the other from Holland.

 

 

BUSINESS


EU anti-trust regulators have opened an investigation into Amazon to establish if it misuses "sensitive data" from independent retailers who sell on the Amazon website. The European Commission said it would examine Amazon's standard contracts with marketplace sellers. It will also look at how data is used to allocate prominent slots on pages. Amazon issued a statement saying that it will cooperate fully with the European Commission and “continue working hard to support businesses of all sizes and help them grow."

UK inflation remained at 2% in June, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics, which is the same figure as in May.

Swatch, the Swiss watchmaker, says that interim sales in Hong Kong have dropped because of what it called "political turbulence" in the region. Sales in the US, Japan and mainland China were positive over the first half of the financial year but the company’s total sales for the period dropped 4.4% and profits fell 11.3%

Google's controversial plan to launch a censored search engine in China has been "terminated", according to a company executive. “Project Dragonfly” was reported to have ceased late last year.

BT is selling its global headquarters, BT Centre, to Orion Capital Managers for £210m. The deal includes an initial leaseback agreement of 30 months during which time BT will move its headquarters to a new London location.


SPORT

Football...Newcastle United have appointed Steve Bruce as their head coach on a three-year contract. The former Sunderland manager resigned from his post at Sheffield Wednesday on Monday following talks with Newcastle at the weekend.

West Ham have signed striker Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt in a club record deal worth up to £45m. The 25-year-old former France under-21 international has signed a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.
Manchester United have eased to a 4-0 win against Leeds in Perth at the end of their nine-day stay in Australia.

Cricket...Jason Roy has been named in England's Test squad for the first time for the match against Ireland at Lord's, which starts on 24 July. Roy scored 443 runs as an opener in England’s World Cup campaign.

Rugby Union...Prop Gareth Milasinovich will miss much of his debut season with Ulster after suffering a knee ligament injury in pre-season training. Ulster say the injury will keep him out of action for approximately nine months.

Athletics... 2018 Commonwealth 800m silver medalist Kyle Langford has been fined by UK Athletics after an incident where he appeared to grab a race official by the throat. Langford was fined £1,000 by the UK governing body and ordered to complete one day of "athletics-based community service". Langford has apologised for the incident.
