Evening Update Wednesday 29 October 2025

A ceremony took place in Nice this morning to mark the fifth anniversary of the attack at the Notre-Dame Basilica on Avenue Jean Medcin. The gathering was followed by a mass. Three people lost their lives when a man walked into the church on 29 October 2020 and stabbed them.  A 21 year old Tunisian man was convicted of the attack.

Nineteen people have been trapped in the Mont Faron cable car in Toulon. The cable car was evacuated by firefighters and no injuries were reported. The facility has been subsequently closed today for technical maintenance. An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the incident.

Jean Castex has been appointedas head of the SNCF. The former French Prime Minister was officially appointed Chairman and CEO of the railway operator today, after being approved for the post by parliament. He was previously head of Paris transport system the RATP. 

Over half a million euros of jewellery has been stolen from the home of an elderly couple in Marseille. The husband, who is in his nineties and a former jeweller, was attacked by two masked men when he opened the door of his home. The two are being sought by police.

The French government has said that its “social leasing” car rental scheme has been a success, with over 41,000 vehicles being leased under the scheme so far since it began in September. The programme, which allows low income households the opportunity to buy an electric vehicle, will remain open until the level of 50,000 vehicles is reached.
