Evening Update Thursday 30 October 2025

Five suspects have been arrested after an armed robbery this afternoon in Lyon. A precious metals refinery was targeted using explosives and firearms at about 2pm. The prefecture said that goods which were stolen had been recovered. Five people at the facility sustained minor injuries.

Five more people have been arrested in connection with the recent burglary at the Louvre in Paris. The Paris prosecutor’s office said that the five had been detained at various locations in and around the capital. Two other suspects have already been charged and placed in pre-trial detention.

Three people have been arrested after police dismantled an illegal car parts trading network in the Bouches-du-Rhone. The arrests follow several weeks of surveillance by authorities. Parts were allegedly stolen from almost thirty vehicles.

Nicolas Sarkosy has received a visit in prison from French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin. The two men reportedly spoke for forty five minutes in the presence of the prison governor. The visit has proved to be controversial. Several dozen lawyers have signed a letter in which they suggest that the visit represents a conflict of interest.

Over nine hundred homeless people died on the streets of France in 2024, according to a homelessness association. Les Morts de la Rue said that 912 deaths of homeless people were recorded in 2024, a 16% increase compared to 2023. The average age at death was 47.7 years which is 32 years younger than the general population. The deaths were mostly amongst homeless men.

The French economy grew more than expected over the summer. Government statistics office INSEE [PRONUNCIATION: “IN-SEE”] said that growth in the July to September quarter was 0.5% compared to the previous three months, up from an initial forecast of 0.3%.

The French Foreign Ministry has said that it plans to deliver humanitarian aid to Jamaica, which was affected by a devastating hurricane earlier this week. The aid, which will be delivered by sea in the next few days, includes water treatment units.
