Evening Update Wednesday 13 November

The inauguration of Line 3 of the tramway in Nice took place today. The first train left Terminal 2 of the airport at 1.45 this afternoon and arrived at the St Isadore stop about half an hour later. It’s particularly important for football supporters who will be able to use the new line to get to the Allianz Riviera Stadium. Trains on the 7km line stop at 11 stations, 6 of which are brand new stations created for use by Line 3. Passengers have been able to check out the new line for free this afternoon and various events have been taking place at the stadium to celebrate the opening.

A man in his twenties is in a critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in Draguignan. The man, who was a pedestrian, was in a collision with a light vehicle on the avenue de Tuttlingen this morning. He was airlifted to the Sainte-Anne hospital in Toulon by a spinal injury helicopter.

Meteo France are forecasting unsettled weather for our region tomorrow. A Yellow weather warning is in operation for rain, flooding and thunderstorms in the Var from midday tomorrow. The Alpes Maritimes is under a yellow alert for rain and flooding from 2pm tomorrow and for thunderstorms from 1pm. There’s also currently a yellow avalanche warning for the Alpes Maritimes which is in force until at least 3pm tomorrow.

A man has been stabbed in Cannes this afternoon. The 21 year old received two stab wounds outside a restaurant on the Croissette. Two suspects were arrested shortly afterwards and the man’s injuries are not thought to be serious.

Traffic wardens in Nice are on strike today. They’re protesting against poor wages and tough working conditions. While legally the city council could replace the wardens with municipal police, a city council member has said “this will not be the case” during today strike action.

Ceremonies have been held today in Paris to mark the 4th anniversary of the attacks of November the 13th 2015. They were held at various places affected by the attacks including the Bataclan, the Stade de France and restaurant terraces. 130 people lost their lives and 350 were injured in the attacks.

 

BUSINESS

UK inflation rose at its slowest pace in almost three years last month. The Office for National Statistics said consumer prices rose 1.5% in October, against 1.7% in September. The ONS said that a fall in utility prices helped ease inflation in October but that was partially offset by rising clothing prices.

Heineken has been appointed Official Beer Partner of Uefa Euro 2020. The deal includes exclusive beer sales rights at stadiums, fan zones and fan villages, LED pitch boarding exposure, digital rights, Man of the Match presentations, match screenings and ticket giveaways.

British Land has reduced the value of its retail property portfolio because of the problems facing UK retailers. The value of British Land's shopping centres, retail parks and shops has been reduced by £599m, or 10.7%. It reported half-year losses of £440m, compared with a £42m loss in the same six-month period in 2018.

Luxury handbag maker Mulberry has blamed higher half-year losses on fewer shoppers visiting its UK stores amid tough high street trading. The company reported a pre-tax loss of £9.9m in the six months to 28 September.

 

SPORT

 

Football… Legendary Spanish player David Villa has announced that he’ll retire next month. The former Barcelona striker will end a 19-year career, in which he won the 2010 World Cup and 2008 European Championship. He also won two La Liga titles and the Champions League.

Cricket… West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran has been banned from the next four Twenty20 internationals after admitting to ball tampering. He was caught on camera using his thumb to scrape the ball and seam during the one-day series win over Afghanistan. Pooran has accepted the charge under the ICC code.

Athletics… Australia's five-time Paralympic champion Kieran Modra has died after a road accident. Modra, who was visually impaired, was riding his bike when he was in a collision with a car near Adelaide.
