Evening Update Friday 12 September 2025

A major union representing French air traffic controllers has cancelled its strike notice for 18 September. The union said that the formation of a new French government has interrupted its negotiations and it is waiting for a new government to be formed. However, the union has said that it now intends to strike from October 7-9.

The Grasse public prosecutor has referred the knife attack at a school in Antibes to an investigating judge. The prosecutor said that the alleged attacker is 18 years old and of Kurdish origin. He was receiving treatment for psychiatric disorders at the time of the attack.

A migrant camp in Ventimiglia has been dismantled by authorities. The operation was coordinated by the Prefecture of Imperia. The Mayor of Ventimiglia Flavio Di Mura said that the local authority is setting up a security service that will prevent tents from being reinstated on the site. He added that identification and photo-tagging of all migrants in the area is underway, saying that “those eligible will be welcomed, while the others will be expelled”.

The A500 Monaco tunnel has been closed to traffic in both directions for several hours this afternoon after a serious accident. A collision occurred between two vehicles inside the tunnel at about 12.30. Emergency services have been on the scene and traffic was being taken off the motorway at Junctions 57 and 58. The tunnel reopened in both directions at about 3.30 this afternoon.

The Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has said that the National Police in Grasse are increasing their operations against drugs trafficking. Two individuals were arrested yesterday and four fixed penalty fines were issued. Drugs were also seized.

A metal detector enthusiast has appeared in court in Grasse. The 64 year old retired police officer received a fine, part of which was suspended, from the criminal court in Grasse for unauthorised use of a metal detector, damaging archaeological heritage and failing to report a find. Gendarmes found a stash of 300 historical coins at his home. The accused claimed that he was just practising a hobby.

 

BUSINESS

New data released today shows that there was no growth in the UK economy in July. The Office for National Statistics said the economy saw zero growth in the month, which was in line with expectations though. The UK economy expanded by 0.4% in June and by 0.2% in the three months to July.

More than 300 South Korean nationals have returned home after being detained during an immigration raid at a new car manufacturing plant in the US. A Korean Air plane was charted to fly the workers and 14 non-Koreans who were also detained in the raid back to South Korea. Hyundai has said that the raid at the plant in the US state of Georgia will delay its opening by at least two months.

 

SPORT

Football… Chelsea player Liam Delap could be out until November or December after sustaining a hamstring injury in the club’s recent match against Fulham. Manager Enzo Mares-ca said that the player will be unavailable for 10 to 12 weeks. Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich in June

Everton’s Jack Grealish has been named the Premier League's player of the month for August. It’s the first time the England player has won the award.

Athletics… America sprinter Erriyon Knighton has been given a four-year ban after the Court of Arbitration for Sport partially upheld appeals from World Athletics and the World Anti-Doping Agency against a decision not to suspend him. He had tested positive for a banned substance used for muscle growth in March 2024.
