Monaco’s new minister of state sets out his vision - Monaco’s new Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand has given his first press conference since taking office, pledging to serve with humility, transparency, and determination. Calling himself a "Monégasque at heart", he outlined his goals to strengthen public finances, improve tax transparency, and support sustainable development. He stressed the importance of helping the Principality exit the international grey list by meeting global financial standards and also highlighted plans to rethink urban planning to enhance quality of life and preserve Monaco’s unique identity.

Unmarked private radar cars - From this coming Monday, the 15th of September, unmarked private radar cars will patrol roads in the Rhône and Hérault departments of France, focusing on roads near Lyon and Béziers with speed limits of 70 km/h or higher. These cars, already used in cities like Nice, operate day and night on set routes known for high accident and speeding rates. The goal is to deter speeding.

Ban on social media - A French parliamentary commission has recommended banning social media for under-15s and imposing a digital curfew for 15–18-year-olds, citing TikTok’s harmful content. They also suggest banning phones in schools and holding parents accountable for “digital negligence.” Similar measures are being considered across the EU to protect children online.

Air France offers free in-flight WiFi - Air France is now offering on some planes, free in-flight WiFi via Elon Musk’s Starlink, aiming to equip 30% of its fleet by the end of 2025 and all by next year. Passengers can access it through a free Flying Blue membership to stream and message during flights. This upgrade is part of a €1 billion customer experience overhaul, using Starlink’s faster low-orbit satellites already popular in rural France.

Fight against illegal rodeos – In an attempt to stop illegal motorbike rodeos near Puget-sur-Argens, the local gendarmerie will use drones for weekend night patrols until November. These dangerous gatherings cause noise and safety risks. The drones will help to track offenders. Under France’s 2018 law, such behaviour can lead to heavy fines, prison and vehicles being confiscated.

Debate on the future of the Tende tunnel - A debate on the future of the Tende tunnel will take place today Friday 12th September, in Breil-sur-Roya, organised by Roya Expansion Nature (REN). While many welcomed the tunnel’s reopening, REN warns that opening a second tunnel could increase traffic, pollution, and safety risks. They call for careful monitoring and funding for pollution control. Meanwhile, some in Italy support using the tunnel both ways, citing feasibility studies.

March of the animals - The popular “March of the Animals” from Nice is going to Paris for the first time on Sunday, 5th of October. Created in 2022 the event celebrates animals and their well-being. After drawing 2,000 participants in Nice this April, the march will now take place on the Champs-Élysées. The free event welcomes all animal lovers.

Business

Inflation in the US rose to 2.9% in August, driven by higher food and goods prices, just days before the Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates. Slowing job growth and rising unemployment add pressure for a rate cut, despite concerns over tariff-driven price increases. Core inflation held steady at 3.1%.

And - Microsoft and OpenAI have signed a non-binding agreement outlining new relationship terms, paving the way for OpenAI to restructure as a for-profit company. While details remain undisclosed, both firms said they are working toward a definitive deal. The move marks a shift in their partnership as OpenAI seeks to raise capital more freely and potentially go public to support future AI development.

Sport

Football - Manchester United face an uphill battle to reach the Women's Champions’ League group stage after a surprise 1-0 defeat to SK Brann in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie.

And Lukas Hradecky, AS Monaco’s goalkeeper, will be out for about two months due to an injury sustained during the match against Strasbourg.

Cycling - Italy’s Filippo Ganna powered to victory in a dramatically shortened Stage 18-time trial at the Vuelta a España, while Britain’s Tom Pidcock maintained his hold on third place in the general classification.

A recent study has revealed that many Brits struggle to focus, with one in ten unable to concentrate for more than five minutes. Nearly a third admit tea breaks and “brew-crastination” disrupt their work, alongside social media and chatting. Despite distractions, 44% use tech tools to boost productivity.
