D-Day Commemoration - During the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, King Charles III honoured the "22,000 Britons who gave their lives" in the operation in Ver-sur-Mer, Calvados. He also praised the courage and sacrifice of the French Resistance. An international ceremony at Omaha Beach at 3:30pm included leaders from twenty nations and around 4,500 attendees, including 200 veterans, to honour the heroes of Operation Overlord. The day will conclude with a speech by Emmanuel Macron, followed by an exclusive interview in French tv journals at 8pm.

Frustrated Farmers in Aix - Farmers are frustrated and feeling helpless due to the unauthorized occupation of their meadow by travellers in Aix-en-Provence. About 200 caravans occupied four hectares of field on Sunday 2nd June, causing electrical issues in the neighbourhood and using local residents' water. The police have inspected the area, and farmers have filed a complaint. They are requesting the state to provide designated passage areas with grass fields, water points, and electricity for such travellers.

Maritime Safety - Eight people have died in diving accidents since the beginning of this year. On Sunday, 2nd June, two divers drowned in the Var and Cap Dramont. In comparison, there was only one death at the same time last year. The maritime prefecture plans to increase diving inspections and emphasize safety instructions: ensure optimal weather conditions, check equipment, avoid diving alone, and do not overestimate physical abilities. The emergency rescue number at sea is 196.

Fire in Nice - A fire broke out in the early hours of this morning at 4am in the basement of a 12-storey building in Les Moulins, Nice. More than 40 people have been evacuated, and thankfully no one was hurt.

Google faces a £13.6bn lawsuit in the UK for allegedly monopolizing the online advertising market, causing losses to UK publishers. Accused of anti-competitive practices, Google's legal director called the lawsuit "speculative”. The case has been brought by Ad Tech Collective Action LLP, which aims to secure compensation for affected publishers. The case includes all relevant UK publishers unless they specify otherwise. No court date has been set, and the case is funded by an unknown third party.

Nvidia's market value has soared past $3 trillion, surpassing Apple to become the world's second most valuable publicly listed company, just behind Microsoft. The chipmaker's share price rose over 5%. Nvidia now aims to attract more small-time investors. Founded in 1993, Nvidia initially focused on graphics chips for gaming but has expanded into AI-powered technology since last year, reporting explosive sales growth.

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a ban on fossil fuel advertising to combat climate change, likening the industry to the "godfathers of climate chaos." This comes as new data shows increasing global warming rates, driven by human activities. Guterres emphasized the need for urgent political action and accused the industry of "greenwashing" and obstructing progress. The UN has no enforcement power for the ban, but the call supports ongoing campaigns against fossil fuel advertising to meet global climate targets.

SPORTS
Cricket - There are no plans in place to move any T20 World Cup fixtures out of New York despite growing fears over substandard pitches. Serious concerns are mounting over the unpredictable nature of the drop-in surfaces at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium after the first two fixtures played at the venue. On Monday, Sri Lanka were bowled out by South Africa for 77 – their lowest score in T20s - while India dismissed Ireland for 96 on Wednesday.

Formula 1 - Sergio Perez has signed a new two-year contract to stay at Red Bull in Formula 1 until the end of 2026.

Athletics - Kenya's 10km road race world record holder Rhonex Kipruto has been banned for six years because of irregularities found in his Athlete Biological Passport. The 24-year-old will be stripped of his record, which he set in Valencia in 2020, and the 10,000m bronze medal he won at the 2019 World Championships. He will be banned until May 2029 after being provisionally suspended on 11 May 2023 for violating anti-doping rules.
Meanwhile, Katarina Johnson-Thompson will renew her rivalry with Olympic heptathlon champion Nafi Thiam at the European Athletics Championships in Rome before their anticipated battle for gold at Paris 2024.
