Meteo France have said that yesterday was the hottest day ever recorded in France in the month of September. Many departments in central and western areas of the country are currently on a yellow warning for heat, with temperatures of around 35 degrees expected in some areas. Meteo France have said that "a very hot air mass" is settling across the whole of France this week" with very warm air from the Sahara affecting the country. It added that the duration of the extreme heat episode and its intensity so late in the season are "remarkable". No real change is expected until at least Sunday.

President Macron has announced that up to 44,000 schools will be renovated within the next ten years. Speaking during a visit to a school in Orthez in the Pyrenees-Atlantique today, he said that about half a billion euros would be released from the government's Green Fund in order to reduce the energy consumption of educational establishments.

A driver has received a five year prison sentence for causing the death of a scooter rider in Nice. The 21 year old woman was riding a scooter in Nice in November last year when she was hit by a van. The court found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

A group of families in Marseille have taken the French government to court in an effort to stop drugs related violence in the city. According to a report in Le Parisien, an order was filed with the administrative court in Marseille yesterday. There have been about 90 killings or attempted killings related to drugs dealing in the city so far this year.

A member of the British royal family will reportedly be visiting Marseille on Saturday. Catherine, Princess of Wales will be attending England's first match of the Rugby World Cup at the Stade Velodrome. According to reports, her husband, William, Prince of Wales is scheduled to be in Bordeaux the following day at Wales' match against Fiji.

 

BUSINESS

It's been announced that Alan Joyce, the CEO of airline Qantas, will leave his position two months earlier than scheduled. He was set to leave in November but will now leave the role immediately. Chief financial officer Vanessa Hudson will succeed Mr Joyce tomorrow. In the past two years Qantas has faced criticism for issues such as the price of its fares, flight delays and cancellations, and its treatment of workers.

The value of retail sales in the UK increased by 4.1% in August, compared to a year earlier according to the British Retail Consortium and KPMG. Sales of non-food items had their best month since February, helped by higher spending on health and beauty, but clothing and footwear saw weaker growth.

 

SPORT

Cricket... England women’s' team player Sophie Ecclestone is out of action for the time being after an operation on her shoulder. England hope she will be fit for the planned tour of India in December.

Football... The Republic of Ireland's Evan Ferguson is set to miss the team's Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and the Netherlands. The Brighton player suffered a knee injury during the match against Newcastle at the weekend.

Motorsports... Formula 1 governing body the FIA has said that all teams complied with its cost cap last year. It said that certificates of compliance had been given to the teams after what it called "an intensive and thorough process".
