A Frenchman has gone on trial charged with the murder of his wife, in a high-profile trial that has caught public attention - because the victim's body has never been found. Cédric Jubillar, a 38 year-old painter-decorator, is accused of killing his wife Delphine during the height of the Covid pandemic in December 2020 in a small village near Toulouse. He has always denied the charges and investigators have struggled to build a case. The mystery has rarely been far from the headlines over the past five years. Self-declared investigators have set up countless chat groups where they swap theories about the case.

At least 100 town halls around France have raised the Palestinian flag above their buildings, in defiance of a ban on flying foreign flags. It comes after France officially recognised a Palestinian state at a UN assembly in New York last night.

In local news, a judicial investigation has been opened after Sunday night's near-miss at Nice airport. An Easyjet plane preparing to take off was nearly hit by a Nouvelair flight coming in to land in dense fog. The Nice prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into "endangering the lives of others". Investigators from France's civil aviation authority have also visited Nice airport to interview those involved.

Residents of a village in the west of the Var have been told that their tap water isn't safe to drink. The public health warning applies to the village of Signes, north of Toulon. Water supplier Veolia says residents there shouldn't drink the water or use it to clean food or brush teeth. Bottled water has been handed out.

Gendarmes have cleared an illegal camp alongside the A8 motorway in Roquebrune-sur-Argens, in the Var. Thirty caravans were ordered to leave. The town's mayor said the camp was a fire hazard.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele has won his first Ballon d'Or. PSG, who won the Champions League, league title and the French Cup last season, came away with several of the key men's awards at the Paris ceremony last night, which included an award presented by Princess Charlene of Monaco. Dembele was in tears as he stood on the stage. PSG were playing Marseille at the same time but he's been sidelined due to injury.

Tickets have just gone on sale for the lemon festival in Menton next February. It’s famous for its unusual sculptures made entirely of citrus fruits. The event also includes carnival parades and the theme this coming year is Living Wonders.

BUSINESS

Shares in Porsche fell by more than 7% after it warned that delays in its electric vehicle rollout will dent the carmaker's 2025 earnings. Caught between electrification and its iconic petrol-powered sports cars, the German firm said it will slow its push for electric vehicles as demand weakens. Shares of its parent Volkswagen also fell by more than 7% after the car-marker said it will spend billions to overhaul Porsche's line-up of vehicles.

TikTok's algorithm - the technology that determines what users see in their feed - will be copied and retrained using US user data as part of a deal to secure the app's future in the country. A White House official said that TikTok's recommendation system will be audited and operated by a new joint venture involving US investors in order to meet requirements for the app's sale.

The outlook for Wednesday: fine and sunny in the Var and on the Alpes-Maritimes coast, the chance of some thunderstorms and light rain inland in the Alpes-Maritimes. Strong winds gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour. Temperatures tomorrow reaching 21 degrees Celsius on the coast and 18 inland.
