Evening Update Tuesday 2 September 2025

At least five people have been injured in a knife and shooting attack in Marseille this afternoon. One of the injured is in a critical condition. The attack happened on the Cours Belsunce in the centre of the city at about 2.45. The attacker was killed by police. Initial reports suggest that the suspect had been evicted from a hotel and returned to the premises where he attacked three people, including the manager and his son. He then attacked two other people in the Cours Belsunce before being apprehended by police. The Minister of the Interior, Benoit Payan , is expected in Marseille this evening.

This summer has been the third hottest in France since 1900, according to the government. Minister for Ecological Transition Agnes Pannier-Runacher said that the summer had been marked by two heatwaves. According to Meteo France, the average temperature over the summer was 22.2 degrees, which was exceeded only in the summers of 2003 and 2022.

Electricity and gas workers in France are taking industrial action today. It's a 24-hour strike. They are calling for improved wages, the repeal of recent pension reforms and a reduction in the amount of VAT applied to gas and electricity bills.

A school principal has taken his own life on the first day of the new academic year at a school in Cantal in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alps region of France. 42 year old Caroline Grandjean had been the victim of homophobic abuse and threats.

A man has lost his life in a serious motor accident in the Vaucluse department. The 21 year old was driving on the road between Avignon and Carpentras last night when his car was hit by another vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. Three people in that car survived the impact but are in a serious condition in hospital. An investigation has been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

If you have an e-mail address ending in monaco.mc or libello.com, you're being advised to check your e-mail configuration before changes scheduled for 15 September. On that date, outgoing mail servers for @monaco.mc and @libello.com mailboxes whose configuration does not meet international security standards will be permanently shut down. Affected users will no longer be able to send emails. In response to the rise in phishing attacks, Monaco Telecom is strengthening the security of its sending and receiving servers. Users of those mailboxes should check that their email software (such as Outlook, Mail, Thunderbird) is correctly configured on Monaco Telecom's secure servers, on all the devices they use. Customers who only use Monaco Telecom's Webmail client do not need to take any action, as their email is already transmitted via secure servers. To assist users, a dedicated page has been set up on monaco-telecom.mc/config

Donald Trump said that India has offered to cut its tariffs on US goods to what he called “nothing”. He also referred to current trade relations between the two countries as "a totally one sided disaster". Washington says Delhi has been indirectly funding Russia's war in Ukraine by buying most of its oil and military products from Russia.

French energy company EDF has confirmed that the lifespan of two of its nuclear power stations in the UK will be extended by one year. The Heysham 1 plant in Lancashire and another in Hartlepool began producing electricity back in 1983 and were expected to be operational for 25 years. However, they will now continue electricity production until 2028 after a positive review of the condition of their nuclear cores.

Swiss food company Nestle has dismissed its chief executive because he failed to disclose what the company said was a "romantic relationship" with a "direct subordinate". Laurent Freixe had been with Nestle for almost 40 years and was appointed global chief executive last September.

Football…Manchester City have signed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain after selling Ederson to Fenerbahce. He's joined them on a five-year deal with the option of a further year. He was previously with Inter Milan and played for Italy at national level.

Cricket… Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the limited-overs series against New Zealand and India but is expected to be fit for the Ashes against England. Cricket Australia said that he has experienced some ongoing lower back pain following the West Indies Test tour," which will require further management over the coming months.
