Former President Nicolas Sarkozy to be imprisonned - Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to be imprisoned on the 21st of October at Paris’s Santé prison after receiving a five-year sentence for the alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 campaign. He will likely be held in isolation in a private 10 m² cell, with limited privileges, while his lawyers plan to request his release immediately.

Drug traffickers arrested - Nine people have been arrested for drug trafficking after police seized one kilo of cocaine, two handguns, €17,000, and two vehicles in Nice. All were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 6 to 30 months.

Flu and Covid vaccination - According to the Regional Health Agency (ARS), Flu and Covid circulation remains low in Vaucluse, making it the ideal time to get vaccinated. The ARS urges residents, especially seniors, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses, to get both vaccines, as last year’s flu caused high mortality and low vaccination rates.

Fire - An electric bike battery has caught fire around this morning at a Decathlon store in Fréjus, Var. Staff quickly removed the bike from the building before firefighters arrived.

Police uncovered an apartment used for prostitution - Police have discovered an apartment used for prostitution, arresting nine people in a raid, including suspected pimps and three sex workers in Toulon, Var. The investigation, opened for aggravated pimping and drug possession, also led to the seizure of one kilo of narcotics.

WorldSkills national finals - A 24-year-old electronics enthusiast from Carnoules represents Var in the WorldSkills national finals in Marseille, showcasing her expertise in electronic circuit design and programming. Overcoming dyslexia and a career change from medicine, she’s already a robotics champion and now aims for national gold in a male-dominated field.

French PM new announcements - French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced the suspension of the pension reform until the 2028 presidential election, a new tax on the ultra-rich, and the end of using article 49.3 to pass laws without a vote. He also pledged to reduce the deficit below 5%, strengthen local governance, and formalize New Caledonia’s new constitutional status.

Man suffers from cardiac arrest in Nice - A 50-year-old man has suffered a cardiac arrest this afternoon near Nice train station but was successfully resuscitated and taken to hospital. 

Covid and flu shots in Monaco - Monaco pharmacies will start offering updated Covid-19 and flu vaccines from Wednesday, with health authorities urging vulnerable groups to get vaccinated.

New temporary licence plates in 2026 - Starting in early 2026, new cars in France will have pink temporary license plates to make them easier to identify and verify. The change aims to help police spot expired “WW” plates and prevent administrative mix-ups and fraud.

Train traffic disrupted - Train traffic between Cannes and Grasse is heavily disrupted this afternoon after a man was hit by a train at Ranguin station in Cannes La Bocca. Service is expected to gradually resume around 7pm. as police investigate whether the incident was an accident or a suicide.
 

BUSINESS
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, will invest $15bn to build its largest AI data hub outside the US in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, as part of its global AI network. The project, combining cloud, AI, and renewable energy infrastructure, aims to boost AI innovation and data centre capacity in India over the next five years.

Small towns in India are becoming hubs for “cloud farming,” where workers train AI systems for global firms, bringing high-tech jobs to rural areas. Companies such as Desicrew and NextWealth are empowering local youth, especially women, while helping make India a global leader in AI operations.

And - The US and China began imposing new port fees on each other’s ships Tuesday, escalating trade tensions despite plans for leaders to meet later this month. The reciprocal levies, part of a wider tariff dispute, could cost shipping firms millions and follow China’s new export curbs and US tariffs on Chinese goods.

Cricket - India wasted little time in completing a clean sweep over West Indies to give Shubman Gill his first Test series win as captain.

Basketball - Menton Basket have suffered their second loss of the season, falling 63–80 to league leaders Grenoble in National 3 play. Despite a brief comeback attempt, Grenoble dominated throughout, leaving Menton in fourth place overall.

Tennis - Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot has made history by winning his country’s first-ever Masters 1000 title in Shanghai, moving his teammates and friends to tears. His fellow Monégasque players praised his perseverance after injury, humility, and authenticity, calling his victory an emotional and unforgettable moment for their tennis family.
 

WEATHER
Sunny intervals in the Alpes-Maritimes department and a bit hazy in the rest of the region accompanied by moderate winds. Highs of 23 degrees in Nice, 24 in Cannes, Toulon and Marseille and 25 degrees in Saint-Tropez.

Tonight, back to clear skies across the region with temperatures dropping to 17 degrees.

Outlook for tomorrow, fine and bright with highs of 23 degrees though light rain will fall inland accompanied by gentle to moderate winds.
