Evening Update Tuesday 10th June 2025

NEWS
President Macron on France 2 - President Emmanuel Macron will appear on France 2 on the evening of the 10th of June for a special evening show called “Ocean Emergency: A Summit to Change Everything,” linked to the UN ocean conference in Nice. The show will highlight France’s goals for ocean protection and feature citizens actively involved in environmental efforts. The UN Ocean Conference runs from the 9th-13th of June in Nice, with 70 world leaders and thousands of experts attending. The goal is to adopt an action plan and push for treaties on marine ecosystem protection and against illegal fishing and deep-sea mining. However, international divisions remain, and the U.S. is notably absent from the talks.

Road accidents - The Paillon expressway has been closed in the morning of Tuesday the 10th of June due to a three-vehicle accident near La Trinité, above Nice, halting traffic in both directions. As an alternative route, drivers have used the Ariane district in Nice. The same morning, a car has collided violently with a tram in Nice, causing four minor injuries including the tram driver who was thrown from his seat. Emergency services quickly responded, and tram traffic was suspended during the evacuation. No serious injuries were reported, but the crash was loud and drew attention from local officials and police.

Conference combating school bullying - A two-day conference on the 11th and 12th of June will focus on combating school bullying, organized by the association Marion la main tendue and the city of Cannes. The event will include talks and roundtables with experts, teachers, parents, and children, aiming for a child-focused approach. Founder Nora Tirane, whose daughter Marion tragically died by suicide due to bullying, promotes nationwide action and holistic solutions. The conference will also highlight existing programs like pHARe and local initiatives such as anti-bullying lessons and “friendship benches” in schools. Free and open to the public (ages 11+), the event will end with the release of a white paper to share insights and recommendations. Scuba diving as a way to help cancer patients - As a way to face their fears and reconnect with themselves, eleven women with breast cancer, either in treatment or remission, have taken part in their first scuba dive near Marseille. The event, organized by Ader and the Moultiploufs diving club, helps prepare them for a bigger challenge: climbing Roche Faurio (3,730 m) in July. Participants described the experience as calming, empowering, and a reminder that despite its hardships, life can be beautiful. The diving experience is both physically and emotionally therapeutic, encouraging relaxation and emotional release. Together, this supportive and caring group is building strength, physically and mentally, for their upcoming mountain adventure.

64th Monte-Carlo TV Festival highlights - The 64th Monte-Carlo TV Festival runs until the 17th of June, showcasing global stars and major TV moments at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. Highlights include appearances by Robin Wright and Yannick Noah, and free autograph sessions with stars from popular series. French TV will be honoured with cast meetups from hit shows like Astrid et Raphaëlle and L’art du crime. Opening and closing ceremonies feature tributes and exclusive premieres like the U.S. series Watson. Best of all, the entire festival is free and open to the public, with events requiring online reservation available on: www.tvfestival.com

Municipal Beaches - Municipal beaches on the French Riviera, offer affordable sun loungers and parasols in Antibes and Cannes, unlike other pricey private beach clubs. In Antibes, beach chairs can be rented for €10–11 per day on two public beaches open until mid-September. Cannes’ Zamenhof beach, next to the Martinez hotel, offers loungers for €9 and parasols for €8, with online booking. These public beaches provide comfort and accessibility at a low cost, with food and drinks allowed. They’re a great summer deal, attracting both locals and tourists looking to enjoy the Côte d’Azur without breaking the bank.

BUSINESS
French beekeepers are alarmed by a new bill proposing the reintroduction of acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid pesticide banned since 2018 due to its toxicity to bees. They warn it could lead to massive bee deaths, as seen in past decades, and further harm already struggling colonies hit by climate and predators. Supporters argue it's needed to protect crops and maintain food sovereignty, especially since some EU countries still allow it. Apiculture leaders criticize the move as a serious setback after 30 years of fighting harmful pesticides. They urge instead for ecological farming solutions that protect both pollinators and biodiversity.

And - Discussing the French budget in 2026, which aims to find 40 billion euros by 2026, the French government will not remove the tax credit for childcare or elderly care, as they are seen as essential and effective. This credit currently covers 50% of expenses for 26 types of personal services. Budget cuts are being planned to reduce the deficit without raising taxes, with all ministries expected to reassess spending. Minister Amélie de Montchalin has emphasized the need to reduce public spending and even the number of civil servants. She warned that failure to act could risk international oversight, urging responsible and efficient use of taxpayers' money. Prime Minister François Bayrou is due to announce his guidelines for the next budget before the 14th of July, with the aim of reducing the public deficit to 4.6% of gross domestic product (GDP) next year. The government is favouring spending cuts over tax increases.
