Evening Update Thursday 8 September 2022

Enquiries are continuing into the alleged fatal shooting of a man  by a police officer in Nice last night. The man was in a vehicle which was eventually stopped by police on the avenue Henri Matisse after earlier apparently refusing to stop and colliding with a police vehicle. Reports in French media say that the officer who allegedly fired the fatal shot was taken into police custody after the incident.

Thousands of propoerties in the Var which were affected by electricity cuts have now had their power restored. Abou 60,000 households, mostly in the west of the department suffered from power outages after a  supply station was affected by the storm which passed through the region in the early hours of this morning.

President Macron has announced an online national consultation. The president was speaking at the launch today of the National Council for Refoundation. The council, which was announced after the legislative elections, aims to bring together representatives of the political, business and social sectors as well as citizens to discuss a range of issues including health and education. However, this morning's launch, in the Essonne department, was boycotted by many unions

The Town Hall in Cannes is encouraging the local population to register for the municipal information system "Cannes Alerte". The system informs people about means of prevention and safety instructions to follow in the event of flooding or any other major risk in order to quickly get to safety. To register yourself or a loved one, you can go to the www.cannes.com website, choose the “Cannes Alerte” section and fill in the dedicated form. Alerts can be received by SMS or e-mail.

Changes have been made to several Lignes d'Azur bus lines until 10pm this evening because of the OGC Nice / Cologne match at the Allianz Riviera stadium. Vaious stops are being omitted on lines 17, 20, 52 and 69. You can get more information on lignesdazur.com

 

BUSINESS

Workers at Royal Mail in the UK have announced further strikes in a dispute over pay and conditions. Staff in the Communication Workers Union are already staging industrial action today and tomorrow. They will now also strike for 48 hours on 30th September and 1st October.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has launched her own private equity firm, co-founded with a former partner at investment firm the Carlyle Group. SKKY Partners, will focus on investing in consumer and media businesses.

 

SPORT

Tennis.... Nick Kyrgios has been given the biggest fine of the US Open so far for his behaviour in his quarter-final match. He was fined $14,000 after throwing a drinks bottle to the ground and then smashing two racquets at the end of the match. The total of his fines at the tournament was $32,500.

Rugby Union... Former Worcester Warriors player Sam Lewis has joined Bristol Bears. He had been on trial at the club during the summer and featured in two pre-season friendlies. He made 121 appearances for Worcester in a seven-year stay.
