Evening Update Thursday 23 October 2025

The Var and the Alpes-Maritimes are on Meteo France alerts for high winds until eight o’clock this evening as Storm Benjamin passes through our region. Strong gusts are also expected later in the evening and tonight. The Alpes-Marittimes Prefecture has established an operations centre where government services, firefighters, police, Enedis employees and Departmental Council officials are on hand to monitor the  weather situation in the department. Train services have been suspended between Cannes and Grasse this afternoon because of the high winds, but are expected to resume after 5pm. Parks and municipal gardens in Nice have also been closed this afternoon. Elsewhere in France, strong winds have affected parts of the north-west, with gusts of 161 km per hour being recorded in the Seine-Maritime department.

It’s been announced that next year’s women’s Tour de France will be finishing in Nice. Race organisers announced the routes for both the women’s and men’s tour in Paris earlier today. The women’s Tour takes place from 1 to 9 August next year and the final stage will start on the Place Massena before taking in the Col d’Eze and finishing on the Promenade des Anglais.

A union representing prison officers has criticised the security arrangements being provided in prison for Nicolas Sarkozy. The former president, who began a prison sentence in Paris earlier this week, is being provided with bodyguards who are stationed in a neighbouring cell. The union called the arrangement “a security madness” and “an unprecedented humiliation of the prison service”.

Vinci Autoroutes has warned against the dangers of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas being misused for leisure purposes. Results of a survey carried out by the motorway operator show that nitrous oxide consumption mainly affects young people under 35 and that their awareness of the risks associated with this consumption while driving is very low. It said there had been an increase in road accidents attributed to the consumption of nitrous oxide.
