An investigation is under way after two planes narrowly avoided a collision at Nice airport last night. An Easyjet plane for Nantes was on the runway ready for take off when a Nouvelair plane came in to land. Witnesses say the planes avoided a collision by just a few metres. Visibility was poor due to fog. The Easyjet pilot, in a state of shock, refused to take off and the flight was cancelled.

French president Emmanuel Macron has taken to Israeli television to deliver his strongest criticism yet of Israel's actions in Gaza. He warned that Israel's killing of civilians is destroying its image and credibility. Macron also defended his decision to officially recognise the Palestinian state at a UN assembly today - which he says would sideline Hamas.

In local news, power has been restored to tens of thousands of homes in the Var after last night's storms and flash flooding. 15,000 homes had no electricity overnight, mainly around La Seyne-sur-Mer and Six-Four-les-Plages.

A forest fire near Puget-Théniers in the hills above Nice on Saturday evening has been brought under control. 15 hectares of land caught fire, in a forest area that was difficult for firefighters to reach. No one was injured and no properties were damaged.

A trespasser who cycled alongside the railway tracks between Cannes and Golfe-Juan on Saturday evening has had a lucky escape. He was knocked off his bike by the turbulence from a passing high-speed train and suffered minor leg injuries. Trains were delayed for two hours.

In local football, AS Monaco have climbed to second in the Ligue 1 table after a thrilling 5-2 win against Metz at the Stade Louis II. They're behind leaders PSG on goal difference alone. OGC Nice are down in 12th place after losing 4-1 away at Brest.

And Princess Charlene of Monaco will present a prize on stage in Paris tonight at the prestigious Ballon d'Or football awards ceremony. The Socrates Prize rewards a player for their charity and community work. 

BUSINESS

Flight disruption across Europe has continued today, with Brussels Airport in Belgium asking airlines to cancel nearly half of their flights. Several of Europe's busiest airports have spent the past few days trying to restore normal operations, after a cyber-attack on Friday disrupted their automatic check-in and boarding software. Disruption has eased significantly in Berlin and London Heathrow, but delays and flight cancellations remained.

Meanwhile, British chancellor Rachel Reeves says the government’s promise to “kickstart the economy” is under way. It comes after London Gatwick Airport’s £2.2bn second runway was approved yesterday. Gatwick has estimated that the project will add 14,000 jobs and as much as £1bn in extra economic activity each year.

Clear skies tonight and a gentle breeze with temperatures overnight going down to 17 degrees celsius on the coast and 11 inland. The outlook for Tuesday: mostly fine and sunny with some occasional light cloud and possibly some strong gusts of wind in western parts of the Var coast. Temperatures tomorrow reaching 22 degrees Celsius on the coast and 20 inland.
