An MP for a constituency in the Bouches-du-Rhone has said that he is going to ask for a parliamentary inquiry into the violence centred on drugs dealing in Marseille. 23 people have died so far this year as the result of the so-called settling of accounts in the drugs trafficking community in Marseille. Demonstrators gathered in front of the town hall on Saturday demanding a parliamentary enquiry and the creation of a national plan to fight against crime and killings linked to drugs trafficking.

The 11 year old British girl who was fatally shot in Britanny has been named by the local mayor as Solaine Thornton. The girl and her eight-year-old sister were playing on a swing as their parents tended their barbecue on Saturday in the village of Saint-Herbot, when a neighbour began firing at them with a shotgun. Local reports say that the neighbour was in dispute with the British family over a plot of land adjoining the two properties. The neighbour, a 71-year-old Dutch national, and his wife have been taken into police custody.

Nice mayor Christian Estrosi has paid tribute to former Italian Prime Minister and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi who died today. The mayor said that he was "a great industrialist and emblematic figure of Italian politics" who "was a friend of France and a committed European".

Meteo France have a yellow warning for storms in the AM until 9pm this evening. In the Var there are yellow warnings for storms until 11pm and for heavy rain and flooding until midnight tonight. There are yellow warnings for storms tomorrow in the AM from 4am to 9pm and for heavy rain and flooding from midday until 11pm. In the Var, there's a yellow warning for storms from 4am to 11pm tomorrow. There's also a yellow warning again for heavy rain and flooding in the Var from midday to 11pm.

Two children are in hospital in a serious condition after a road accident in Nice yesterday evening. According to local reports, an 8 year old and and 11 year old were hit by a car at the junction of rue Georges Ville and rue Barla.

The ANSM French Medicines Agency has put the synthetic cannabis derivative HHC and two of its derivatives on the list of narcotics. The agency said that research has shown that HHC presents a risk of abuse and dependence equivalent to that of cannabis. In addition, the chemical structure of those products is close to that of delta-9 THC which is classified as a narcotic. Minister of Health and Prevention Francois Braun said that from tomorrow, the consumption and sale of HHC will be prohibited.

The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the financing of economy Minister Bruno Le Maire's campaign in the 2016 primary elections. The investigation centres around whether illegal donations may have been made through service provider invoices.

A new statue of Sir Winston Churchill is being inaugurated this Friday in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. It takes place at 6.30pm on the Quai Lindbergh in the presence of the British Consul in Monaco, the International Churchill Society, certain members of the Churchill family, the Mayor and the Municipal Council of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

UK retailer Frasers Group has taken a stake in online electrical appliance site AO World. It acquired the 18.9% stake for 75 million pounds. Frasers Group owns several high street brands including Sports Direct, Evans Cycles, Flannels, Frasers and Game.

UK media regulator Ofcom has confirmed that it has been a victim of a cyber-attack by hackers. A number of firms, including British Airways, the BBC and Boots, have been affected by breaches recently. Data about some companies regulated by Ofcom, and personal information from 412 employees, was downloaded during the hack. Ofcom said it had "swiftly" alerted all the companies that it regulates.

 

SPORT

Football... David Moyes will reportedly stay on as West Ham manager after winning the Europa Conference League. Moyes' future had been the subject of  speculation. The club secured their Premier League future with two games to spare and went on to end their 43-year wait for a trophy by beating Fiorentina in Prague.

Aston Villa have announced that Christian Purslow is to step down from his position as chief executive and director. He was appointed in 2018.

Rugby Union... Joe Marler and Danny Care have been included in the England squad for the first World Cup preparation camp. Ben Spencer has been recalled. The squad is the first of three to be named by coach Steve Borthwick before the four-Test summer series starts on 5 August.
