Evening Update Monday 10th March 2025

NEWS
Weather Alerts in the Region - Heavy rain and storms are expected in the Alpes-Maritimes and Var from the 10th to the 16th of March, causing road closures and avalanche risks. A yellow alert has been issued in the Alpes-Maritimes for thunderstorms, which are expected around Grasse, Théoule-sur-Mer and Antibes, with temperatures ranging between 6 and 13 degrees. The Mercantour, Haut-Var, and Haut-Verdon massifs are under a yellow avalanche alert, with a high-risk level of 4/5. Several roads are closed due to rockfalls, icy conditions, and rough seas, complicating travel in the region.

Addiction Treatment and Prevention Centre in Monaco - The addiction treatment and prevention centre in Monaco, led by Dr. Jean-François Goldbroch, has been active since September 2024 and already supports over 90 patients, mainly for alcohol, tobacco, and screen addiction. The center offers rapid consultations, prevention efforts, and is expanding its services, including psychotherapy and a dedicated youth consultation. Dr. Goldbroch emphasizes reducing screen time rather than eliminating it and stresses that addiction treatment should focus on support rather than stigma.

Violence Against Minors - An investigation has been launched into child abuse at the Ultra Cimiez sports club in Nice after videos surfaced showing a man hitting young children’s heads with foot balls. The prosecutor has opened a case for "violence against minors under 15 by a person in authority." Several parents plan to file complaints, demanding those responsible be banned from working with children.

Floral Tradition - Hyères remains France’s top flower market despite a decline in horticulturists, continuing its long floral tradition. The city, with its ideal climate, hosts one of Europe’s largest flower markets, where local growers sell blooms like anemones, peonies, and hydrangeas. However, international competition has made roses rare, pushing local producers to highlight the quality and sustainability of their flowers.

Freestyle Ski Competition - The city of Vars, Hautes-Alpes, has hosted several freestyle ski competitions, including the French Slopestyle and Big Air Championships, attracting top athletes and boosting the resort's reputation. Riders performed breathtaking aerial tricks on meticulously maintained snow park features, designed for both pros and beginners. The event showcased Vars’ ambition to become a major freestyle skiing destination.

Cycling and Skiing From Marseille to the Mont Blanc - François-Xavier Milliet and Thomas Sentis will cycle and ski from Marseille to Mont Blanc to raise awareness about glacier melting. Their month-long journey, called "Mer-Cime," highlights climate change and water preservation. They aim to raise €20,000 for Mountain Wilderness while sharing their adventure online.

New Maserati Showroom in Monaco - A new Maserati showroom has opened in Monaco at 9, rue des Açores, launched by BPM Exclusive on the 2nd of March 2025. The inauguration featured the exclusive MCXtrema, a track-only supercar limited to 62 units, highlighting Maserati’s innovation and performance. This showroom offers a luxury experience with personalized vehicle configurations, showcasing iconic models like the MC20, GranTurismo, and Maserati’s electric Folgore range.

BUSINESS
Mark Carney, former Bank of England and Bank of Canada governor, has become Canada’s new prime minister after winning the race to replace Justin Trudeau. With no prior political experience, he now faces a major challenge: managing a trade war with Donald Trump’s U.S. administration. While Carney is seen as highly skilled in economic crisis management, critics question his financial transparency and business ties.

And - In response to US tariffs, Canadian businesses and consumers are boycotting American products, renaming menu items, and reducing travel to the US. The trade dispute has sparked economic uncertainty, with fears of job losses and a potential recession in Canada. While some tariffs have been paused, tensions remain high, and Canada is looking to strengthen ties with other partners.

SPORTS
Formula 1 - The 2025 Formula 1 season is almost upon us, and it gets under way with the Australian Grand Prix from the 14th to the 16th of March. Red Bull's Max Verstappen is targeting a fifth consecutive drivers' title, while McLaren's Lando Norris is hoping to go one better after finishing second to the Dutchman in 2024. However, the main talking point before Melbourne is Lewis Hamilton getting set for his Ferrari debut.

Tennis - Britain's Katie Boulter and Cameron Norrie were knocked out of Indian Wells as they suffered straight-set defeats in the third round. British women's number one Boulter was beaten 6-0 7-5 by seventh seed Elena Rybakina in California. And British men's number two Norrie earlier lost 6-3 7-5 to 10th seed Tommy Paul. Meanwhile, Medvedev progressed as American Alex Michelsen retired after two games because of illness, while Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-3.

Football - Nottingham Forest have lost their appeal against a £750,000 fine for a social media post criticising video assistant referee Stuart Attwell. They were fined by the Football Association in October for an "attack on the integrity of a match official on an unparalleled scale". Forest complained on X about three penalty decisions that went against them during a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Everton on the 21st of April 2024.

Cloudy with rain by 4pm and moderate winds. Highs of 15 degrees in Saint-Tropez, and Toulon, 16 in Nice and Marseille, and 17 degrees in Cannes.

Tonight, mostly grey and wet with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees.

Outlook for tomorrow, cloudy and wet with chances of thunderstorm late afternoon in the Alpes-Maritimes with highs of 14 degrees and moderate winds.
