Evening Update Friday 27 October 2023

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze in a building on the avenue Valerie Giscard d'Estaing in the west of Nice this afternoon. The fire produced plumes of smoke which were visible over a wide area. The Prefecture advised people to avoid the area. Two people were evacuated from the premises but no injuries were reported. The Nice Cote d'Azur Metropolis said that the fire broke out in an annex building which houses non-core activities of the MIN d'Azur wholesale fruit and vegetable market, in premises rented to a company which hosts event equipment. It added that there is no impact on the MIN d'Azur's core business activity and the fire is being contained by firefighters.

A man has been stabbed in Vallauris this afternoon. The incident happened on the Square Garino. Early this evening the attacker was still at large.

A teenager has been taken into custody in Hyeres in the Var in connection with hoax attack e-mails. The sixteen year old is being questioned regarding his possible involvement in the hoax messages which were sent on Wednesday this week. The messages targeted a dozen buildings in Hyeres including the town hall and media library.

French Minister of Transport Clement Beaune has said that the government will add 200 million euros to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle charging terminals. The minister has been holding a meeting with stakeholders in the sector this afternoon.

One person has died and two people have been seriously injured in a road accident in Toulon early this morning. No other vehicles were involved in the crash on Boulevard Emile-Jacquemin.

President Macron has called for what he called a "humanitarian truce" in the Gaza strip to protect the local population. Speaking while attending a European Council meeting in Brussels he added that the French government hopes to evacuate French nationals from the territory "as soon as possible".

The Principality of Monaco has participated in the 73rd session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for Europe. Delegations from the 53 Member States of the WHO European region were present at the meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, along with representatives of partner organizations and civil society. They took stock of the health situation in Europe and discussed the direction of future activities of the Regional Office for Europe.

Next week, VINCI Autoroutes will continue its maintenance and development work on the A8 motorway in the Mandelieu, Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Nice and Beausoleil sectors. Works will require traffic modifications at the Mandelieu Est (n°41), Saint-Laurent-du-Var (n°49), Nice Est (n°55) interchanges. To limit disruption to traffic, interventions will take place at night, between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., from Monday October 30 to Friday November 3.

 

BUSINESS

The owner of British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia has announced a rise in profits. IAG said that operating profit in the period from July to September was 1.745 billion euros, up from 1.216 billion in the same period last year. It reported a strong performance from its routes across the Atlantic.

The US Treasury has imposed new sanctions on key Hamas-linked officials and the financial networks Hamas uses to fund its operations. It said that the sanctions target assets in Hamas’s investment portfolio and individuals who are facilitating sanctions evasion by Hamas-affiliated companies.

Wilko stores are set to return to several towns in the UK. CDS Superstores which acquired the Wilko website and intellectual property after it went into administration said that five stand-alone concept stores will open before Christmas, starting with Plymouth and Exeter, closely followed by two locations in the South-East and one in the North. It said that it plans to give ex-Wilko employees priority as a part of the recruitment process for the new stores.

Football... Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is set to play in his first match for over ten months this weekend. He broke his leg while skiing last December. He'll be playing in the club's game against Darmstadt in the Bundesliga tomorrow afternoon.
