Evening Update Friday 24 November 2023

The head of electricity supplier EDF has said that price rises in 2024 will be limited to 10%. Speaking to French media, Luc Remont said that as regards government measures to limit the electricity costs of consumers, households pay for electricity not only through their bills but also as taxpayers.

An OGC Nice player has reportedly been taken into police custody. A preliminary investigation has been opened by the prosecutor after Youcef Attal, who is an Algerian national and also plays for that country's national team, allegedly posted an item online concerning the conflict between Israel and Hamas. According to French media, the investigation is for apology of terrorism.

About one thousand people have gathered in the Drome department for the funeral of a teenager stabbed at a party last weekend. A winter festival celebration was being held in the community hall in the village of Crepol when a group of about ten people from outside the village tried to gain access and the 16 year old was fatally stabbed. Nine suspects are being questioned by police.

Train services between Nice and Ventimiglia were badly disrupted this afternoon because of an object on the line at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin but the blockage has now been removed and the line is clear. However, the SNCF have said that train services will be disrupted between Grasse and Ventimiglia from this evening because of engineering works. No trains will run at all between Monaco and Ventimiglia tomorrow, Saturday.

HSH Prince Albert II will pay a state visit to Malaysia from this Sunday 26 to Wednesday 29 November, at the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah Shah. The Palace in Monaco said that the official trip will allow the Prince to strengthen political and economic ties between the Principality of Monaco and Malaysia and also to discover local initiatives in terms of respect for the environment and the protection of endangered animal species. During his visit the Prince will inaugurate the new Consulate of Monaco located in Kuala Lumpur.

Meteo France have a yellow warning for high winds in the Var until 4am on Saturday morning.

 

BUSINESS

Several hundred Amazon workers have been demonstrating outside the company's warehouse in Coventry in the UK. The workers have been taking industrial action since the beginning of this year. The workers are demanding higher pay and union recognition. They were joined this morning by representatives of certain workers at Amazon in the United States who are also involved in industrial action.

Music retailer HMV's flagship store on London's Oxford Street has reopened after being closed for four years. HMV closed the store in 2019 after going into administration. It was then taken over by Sunrise Records. The company said its return was due to what it called a "dramatic turnaround", with HMV returning to profit in 2022.

 

SPORT

Motorsports... Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg both crashed in the second practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this afternoon. Charles Leclerc was fastest, ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris with Red Bull's Max Verstappen third fastest.

Football... Former Manchester City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is 'in good health' after being in a car accident, according to his Turkish club. Reports say that the accident happened in Balotelli's home town of Brescia when his vehicle crashed into a wall. No-one else was involved.

Winter Sports... Scotland's men's curling team have beaten Switzerland to get through to the European Curling Championships final against Sweden on Saturday. Scotland are aiming for a fourth title in four attempts.
