Evening Update Friday 14 July 2023

A commemoration ceremony has been held in Nice in honour of the victims of the 14 July 2016 attack. The ceremony took place at the Angel of the Bay memorial on the Promenade des Anglais. 86 white roses were laid in memory of the 86 people who lost their lives. 86 candles were also lit. The names of the victims were read out and a minute's silence was observed. Over 450 people were injured in the attack. This evening an open air concert will be held followed by the shining of 86 beams of light into the sky. In a post on social media Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that "seven years after that terrible evening, the emotion is still as strong, the pain remains present".

In Paris, the traditional July 14 parade has taken place on the Champs Elysees. This year India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the celebrations as guest of honour. Three Indian fighter jets also took part in the fly past and the parade included 240 Indian soldiers. Mr. Modi was presented with the Grand Cross of the Legion d'Honneur. France and India are marking the 25th anniversary of a strategic partnership.

Local strike action is affecting TER ZOU trains this weekend. The Nice - Ventimiglia line will be disrupted. Separately, all bus and tram services in Nice will end at 10pm this evening because of July 14 security measures.

Heavy traffic on French roads is expected at times this weekend. Government roads monitor Bison Fute has declared tomorrow to be red for the whole of France in the direction of departures. Sunday is yellow for the whole of France for both departures and returns, except for the Paris area which is red for returns.

A child has been rescued by firefighters after becoming stuck in a well. The 9 year old boy became stuck at the bottom of the four metre deep well in the village of Sorgues to the north of Avignon. He was uninjured in the incident.

 

BUSINESS

The Unite union has said that several hundred workers at Gatwick Airport are set to take eight days of strike action. The workers at four companies include baggage handlers and ground staff. They intend to take industrial action from Friday 28 July to Tuesday 1 August, and then again from Friday 4 August to Tuesday 8 Augus. The union said that airlines which will be affected include British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair, Tui, Westjet and Wizz. Easyjet said today that talks aimed at resolving the dispute will be taking place next week.

Nissan has announced a vehicle recall because of several defects. It said that the recall concerns 699,000 vehicles in Japan and at least 749,000 outside Japan. The company reassured customers that the faults haven't caused any accidents in Japan.

Telecoms company Nokia has said that it expects revenue and profits for this year to be less than previously forecast. It said that customer spending plans are increasingly impacted by rising inflation and interest rates. It said that some projects, noticeably in North America, are slipping into 2024.

 

SPORT

Tennis.... Novak Djokovic beat Jannik Sinner this afternoon 6-3  6-4  7-6 to reach his fifth straight Wimbledon final. If he wins on Sunday, it'll be his 24th Grand Slam title. In the other semi-final it's Carlos Alcaraz against Daniil Medvedev.

Football... Manchester United have been fined 300,000 euros by Uefa for a "minor" breach of Financial Fair Play rules. They were one of a number of clubs sanctioned by Uefa under rules in place between 2019 and 2022. United said they were "disappointed by the outcome" but added that the club accepted the fine.
