25,000 customers of Enedis in Brittany are still without power following Storm Ciaran, according to the company. Speaking to French media this morning, the regional director of Enedis Bretagne said that "the network is really destroyed in places" and employees were now going house to house to deal with repairs which may concern just one or two customers.

The red warning for heavy rain and flooding in the Pas de Calais department has finished for the time being. However, speaking to French media today, Minister of Ecological transition Christophe Bechu said that a lull in the rainfall is expected over the weekend but more rain is expected early next week and there were "some concerns", according to the minister. Several rivers in the department are still on a red level warning for flooding.

Monaco's economy experienced double-digit growth in 2022, according to data published today by the Principality's statistics office IMSEE. In 2022, Monaco's GDP amounted to 8.34 billion euros, compared to 7.29 billion in 2021. Adjusted for inflation, it increased by 11.1% compared to the previous year. GDP had already increased by 21.9% in 2021.

Seventy-five per cent more trains will be running in our region by December next year, according to an official. Speaking to local media, Jean-Paul Serrus, who is Vice – president of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Regional Council, also said that trains would be made longer to help with overcrowding.

It's been announced that the torch relay for next year's Paralympics will pass through our region. The relay will start at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England, which is the permanent home of the Paralympic flame. The flame will then travel through the Channel tunnel to France. Twelve flames will circulate in France, one of which will pass through Antibes Juan-les-Pins. It's already been revealed that the flame for the main Olympics will be passing through several towns in our region, including Nice and Toulon.

The Cannes Lerins Agglomeration has presented a cheque for just over 18,000 euros to the League Against Cancer thanks to glass recycling collections in 2022. It's a record amount. For each ton of glass recycled, the inter-municipality pays €3.05 to the association. Almost 6,000 tonnes were collected last year.

 

BUSINESS

The UK economy showed no growth in the third quarter, according to an estimate released today by the Office for National Statistics. It said that the services sector fell slightly, which was partially offset by growth in engineering, car sales and machinery leasing.

Drinks company Diagio has said that it expects to see slower growth in the first half of its 2024 year than the second half of fiscal 2023. The company said that this is due to "a materially weaker performance outlook" in Latin America and the Caribbean, which accounts for nearly 11% of Diageo’s net sales.

Cricket... South Africa have beaten Afghanistan by five wickets in the World Cup. Afghanistan won the toss and batted first. They were all out for 244. South Africa were 247 for 5. South Africa have already secured their place in the semi-finals.

Football... James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. He's suffering from an ankle injury sustained in Tottenham's match against Chelsea earlier this week.

In the Premier League tomorrow Wolves are at home to Tottenham, Arsenal play Burnley, Crystal Palace play Everton, Manchester United are against Luton Town and Bournemouth are at home to Newcastle United. Then on Sunday, Aston Villa take on Fulham, Brighton are at home to Sheffield, Liverpool play Brentford, West Ham play Nottingham Forest and Chelsea are against Manchester City.
