Evening News Update Friday 30 November

Part of the A8 motorway was closed to traffic this morning after being occupied by about 150 high school students. The students occupied the carriageway for a few minutes near Cagnes sur Mer at 11.00 this morning. Several junctions were closed by authorities as a security measure and the motorway was open again by midday. Several schools in our region were also blocked by demonstrating students this morning. They were reportedly expressing solidarity with the yellow vest movement and also protesting against the Parcoursup higher education placement system. Meanwhile, yellow vest protesters are expected to gather in Cagnes sur Mer for a demonstration tomorrow. A march will leave around 10:30 from the Théâtre de Verdure in Nice to the centre of Cagnes sur Mer where it is reportedly planned to block the area of Avenue Kennedy and Avenue de Cannes, around the racecourse. A union representing firefighters has called for its members to demonstrate with yellow vest protestors tomorrow at the Antibes payage in the direction of Cannes.


The latest statistics on road fatalities in the Alpes Maritimes have been released. In the first ten months of this year 47 people lost their lives and more than a thousand were injured. The proportion of bikers who are victims of road accidents has increased, from 48% of those killed last year to 53% in 2018 .


The ski season has arrived as the resorts of Isola 2000, Auron and La Colmiane open this weekend. Auron will open for the weekend closing on Monday 3rd and reopening for the rest of the season from Saturday 8th December and La Colmiane will open every weekend until December 22nd.

The records of 500 million customers of the hotel group Marriott International have been involved in a data breach. The hotel chain said the guest reservation database of its Starwood division had been compromised by an unauthorised party. It said an internal investigation found an attacker had been able to access the Starwood network since 2014. The company said it would notify customers whose records were in the database. 


US President Donald Trump and leaders from Canada and Mexico have signed the successor to the North American Free Trade Agreement. The revised deal has been renamed as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. The new agreement will govern a trillion dollars worth of trade between the countries and comes after more than a year of negotiations.


SPORT


Football.. Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez could be out for up to six weeks according to manager Jose Mourinho. Sanchez suffered an injury in training yesterday.


In the English Premier League this weekend Cardiff play Wolves tonight and then on Saturday Crystal Palace play Burnley.Huddersfield host Brighton.Leicester play Watford.Manchester City host Bournemouth.Newcastle face West Ham and Southampton play Manchester United. On Sunday Chelsea play Fulham.Arsenal play Spurs and Liverpool play Everton.


Motorsports… Canadian driver Lance Stroll is to join the Force India team for 2019. His father, Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll rescued the team from administration as head of a group of investors. His 20-year-old son will partner Sergio Perez, who was confirmed as a driver in October. His appointment means that all 20 seats for next season are now confirmed.

 

Rugby Union…There’s one international fixture tomorrow.The Barbarians play Argentina in the traditional pre-festive match at Twickenham. There’s one game in the Gallagher Premiership in England tonight.Harlequins play Exeter while in the Guinness Pro 14 Munster play Edinburgh and Ospreys host Zebre.
