20 years since the passing of Prince Rainier III

20 years since the passing of Prince Rainier III - Sunday April 6th, 2025, marked 20 years since the passing of Prince Rainier III, whose legacy continues to shape Monaco. Known as the “Builder Prince,” he reigned for nearly 56 years, transforming Monaco from a small Riviera enclave into a global symbol of prestige and economic power. Rainier ascended the throne in 1949, inheriting a fragile Monaco post-WWII. His vision expanded the economy beyond tourism and casinos, fostering finance, real estate, and international business. He also led massive infrastructure projects, such as the land reclamation that created the Fontvieille district. While his marriage to Hollywood star Grace Kelly in 1956 brought global attention, Rainier’s leadership was defined by modernization and cultural patronage. He reformed Monaco’s constitution, strengthened its independence, and supported the arts and environmental preservation. When he passed away in 2005, Rainier left behind a Monaco that was more prosperous, independent, and internationally respected. His son, Prince Albert II, carries forward his vision. Two decades later, Rainier is remembered not just as a prince, but as a visionary who built Monaco into the nation it is today.
