Photo - Perched above Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes, the picturesque village of Berre-les-Alpes offers breathtaking views and a rich history. In the late 1970s, it became the home of Super Bear Studios, a renowned recording facility that attracted music legends from around the world and where, at a young age, I spent summers there. Super Bear Studios was established by Damon Metrebian and sound engineer John Etchells. The studio was housed in a former restaurant and was designed with state-of-the-art equipment, including a quadraphonic control room and an MCI JH-500 automated mixing desk. It quickly gained a reputation for its technical excellence and became a sought-after location for artists seeking a unique recording environment.
Over the years, Super Bear Studios hosted a variety of iconic artists, including Pink Floyd, Queen, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, David Gilmour, and Ringo Starr. Notably, Pink Floyd recorded a significant portion of their album The Wall at the studio. The serene setting and high-quality equipment made it an ideal location for musicians looking to create timeless music.
Tragically, in the summer of 1986, a forest fire destroyed the studio. Despite efforts to rebuild, the original structure was lost. For those interested in the rich musical history of the region, Berre-les-Alpes and the story of Super Bear Studios offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of legendary music production.
