The body of a man in his sixties has been discovered in an abandoned nursing home close to the hospital in Cannes. It was workers coming to collect old equipment from the premises who made the disturbing discovery. It’s believed the man may be an SDF who was seeking shelter. Police are investigating.

The Mayor of Menton has gone to the court in Nice to request the forced resignation of three councillors, who he has accused of not performing their duties and undermining the town's interests.  The situation has sparked controversy, and follows a police investigation last month into financial irregularities. The mayor has emphasised the need for responsible governance.

Warm water temperatures continue to make headlines and affect sleep patterns across the Cote d’Azur. A record 29.4d was recorded in the water by a bouy just off the coast of Nice on Sunday. The intense marine heat is responsible for an increase in hot sleepless nights. This and last summer, nighttime temperatures have been tropical for most of the summer, whereas during the sixties it was only one or two nights during summer when night-time temperatures went over 20d.

Police in Juan-les-Pins are investigating a bloody brawl which took place in the early hours of the morning in the town. It’s believed a fight broke out among seven to eight people around 3am. Glass bottles were smashed and one man was seriously injured. He is recovering in hospital.

The city of Nice is cracking down on electric scooters this month. During a single hour yesterday, a control on the Promenade des Anglais stopped dozens of scooters with 25 fines handed out, including eight for lack of insurance, three for speeding, nine for using a phone and five for wearing headsets. Police are treating scooters the same as any other motorised vehicle which has to follow the rules of the road, and where they don’t, fines of up to €135 will equally apply.

Authorities are appealing for extra care when swimming this summer. It follows an alarming 40 drownings along the Cote d’Azur. They’re asking that people pay attention to beach flags and swim in supervised areas. Avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol, while dehydrated or just after eating.

Meanwhile, the Monaco Water Bike Challenge, which started out as a course from Nice to the Principality, will this year feature five teams of athletes and celebrities water cycling from Calvi in Corsica across 180 kilometres of open sea back to Monaco. The event, which is sponsored by the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, seeks to raise awareness of the charity’s international anti-drowning and sport promotion programmes. The event takes place the first weekend in September.

A survey has revealed the most Instagrammed beaches in France, with eight of them located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The list highlights eight beaches here, including four in the Bouches-du-Rhône, three in the Var including Pampelonne beach near St Tropez and just one in the Alpes Maritimes, Paloma beach in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

BUSINESS

After yesterday’s recovery from a routing on Monday, Asian stocks have picked up once again today. In Japan the Nikkei is up another 2%, reversing earlier losses. In New York, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ both ended up 1% higher by close last night. 

Twitter are suing Unilever, Mars, CVS Health and others for orchestrating an illegal boycott that cost the platform billions in revenue shortly after Elon Musk took over the company. Musk tweeted saying: "We tried being nice for 2 years and got nothing but empty words. Now, it is war."

Apple's lucrative deal with Google could be under threat, after a US judge ruled the search giant is operating an illegal monopoly. Google pay Apple $20 billion dollars a year just to be the default search engine on Apple devices. A potential remedy for Google to avoid antitrust actions, could be to terminate that agreement.

SPORT

We have changes at the top of the Olympics leaderboard with the US, China and Australia now in the Top 3. France are fourth with 13 gold medals hotly followed by Great Britain at #5 with 12 Golds.

Last night in the 1500m men’s final, the two hot favourites and long time rivals, Britain’s Josh Kerr and Norways Jakob Inge-brig-tsen, fought for top position throughout the race. However in the closing seconds, American Cole Hocker came storming from behind, passing both of them out to take Gold. Britain’s Kerr had to settle for Silver.

Ireland’s Kellie Harrington made history by becoming the first Irish female athlete to win gold at back-to-back Olympic Games, after a split decision over China's Wenlu Yang in the women's 60kg final in Paris last night. It marks a record fourth gold medal at a single Games for Team Ireland.

Meanwhile, the boxer at the centre of the gender row Imane Khelif won her semi-final last night and will fight for Olympic gold on Friday. The Algerian welterweight was disqualified from last year's World Championships after failing gender eligibility tests.

In football, Brazil thrashed world champions Spain to set up a repeat of the 2008 Olympic women's football final against the United States in Paris on Saturday.

A new event called a ‘marathon race-walk relay’ made its Olympics debut this morning. In it, a team of one man and one woman, take turns to walk but not run a full marathon course. Spain were the first winners completing the course in 2 hours 50 mins 21 sec. 

Today’s main events are taekwondo, wrestling and boxing. Tonight, athletics continue including the Mens 400m final at 9.20pm.

The outlook for tomorrow and towards the weekend is for blue skies and sunshine with highs in the early thirties.
