French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has undergone a surgical procedure. His doctor said that the Prime Minister hadne undergone the surgery for what he called “a cervical lesion” at the weekend. The doctor added that everything went well and the results of analysis will be known in a few weeks. Monsieur Barnier summarized his work activities yesterday, according to the doctor.

A tribute is taking place in Nice this morning on the fourth anniversary of the attack at the Notre Dame basilica. The tributes include the laying of wreaths at the work “La Colombe de la Paix”, a ceremony at the basilica and a mass. Three people lost their lives in the attack on the morning of October 29, 2020.

One hundred thousand euros worth of luxury bags have been stolen from a shop in Cannes. Three people forced their way into the store on the rue d'Alger in the early hours of yesterday morning and escaped in a car with false registration plates.

The five year old child who was shot during a car chase in Rennes at the weekend is still in a critical condition after undergoing two operations. The local public prosecutor said last night that an investigation has been opened for “attempted homicide by a criminal gang”. The child was traveling in a car driven by his father when he was reportedly pursued by another vehicle containing hooded occupants who opened fire.

One person has died in the Cotes d’Armor department in Brittany after being hit by a concrete bollard thrown from a bridge. The man in his twenties was a passenger in a car passing under the bridge. Police are searching for two people believed to have thrown several concrete objects on to the road.

Supporters of Olympique de Marseille have been banned from travelling to the club’s match against Nantes this weekend. The order, which was made by the Minister of the Interior, is in force for the entire day on Sunday. The decree cited the “real and serious” risk of confrontation between supporters of the two clubs.

The body of a seven year old child and his mother have been discovered in the Finistere department in north-west France. The seven year old was found in a car near a coastal path and his mother was found on a beach several kilometers away. The local deputy prosecutor said that “the most likely scenario” is that the mother killed her son before taking her own life.

The trial of French actor Gerald Depardieu in Paris has been postponed until March next year. He is accused of alleged sexual assault on the set of the film Les Volets Verts in 2021. The actor didn't attend court yesterday because of health reasons.

Negotiations are taking place between management and refused collectors in Marseille. The collectors have been on strike for several days, resulting in overflowing bins in the 3rd and 14th arrondissements. They have been protesting over what they claim is constant pressure from management.

 

BUSINESS

German car maker Volkswagen is planning to close at least three factories, according to the head of its workers council. Speaking to employees at the company's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Daniela Cavallo also said that the car maker is planning to lay off tens of thousand employees and cut pay. She said that industrial action by workers would take place if the company didn't change its plans.

Aircraft company Boeing has announced plans to raise up to 19 billion dollars. The troubled company recently announced a quarterly loss of six billion dollars and is cutting several thousand jobs. Strike action is also being taken by employees.

UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer has said that the cap on the price of bus fares in England will be raised to £3 in Wednesday's budget. It is an increase on the current limit of £2 which was introduced under the previous Conservative government to help with the cost of living. The existing cap was due to expire at the end of December.

 

SPORT

Football….Manchester United have parted company with manager Erik ten Hag following their poor start to the season. United lost 2-1 to West Ham at the weekend, leaving them in 14th place in the Premier League. They are also 21st out of 36 teams in the Europa League table. Ruud van Nistelrooy, has been appointed as interim manager.

Chelsea and Nottingham Forest have been fined by the Football Association for failing to control their players in their match earlier this month. They have been ordered to pay £40,000 and £125,000 respectively. Both clubs admitted a Football Association charge. An independent regulatory commission said the punishment needed to reflect that it was a serious incident involving a large number of players from both sides.

Mario Balotelli joined Italian club Genoa on a free transfer. He had been without a club since leaving Turkish Super Lig side Adana Demirspor in the summer. He was part of Manchester City's title winning squad in 2012.

Rugby League… Australia are set to tour England for three Tests next year. A tour was scheduled for 2020 but it was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
