Police search for motorist who fled after knocking down a pedestrian in Mandelieu - Police in Mandelieu are actively searching a motorist who knocked down a man on a zebra crossing and then fled the scene. The victim in his thirties was crossing the road at a zebra crossing shortly after 8.30pm on the Avenue du Général de Gaulle in Mandelieu la Napoule on Monday evening when the car hit him. A witness to the scene immediately alerted the emergency services and the thirty-year-old was taken to hospital in Cannes. The driver of the car left the scene before the police and emergency services arrived.

Road safety – Meanwhile, police say they have confiscated six driving licenses in just one night on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. During a road check operation on the night of Sunday to Monday. Six motorists had their licenses withdrawn for speeding. Some were stopped at 110 km/hour. Twenty-nine other speeding offenses were recorded.

State of natural disaster – The towns of Tourrette-sur-Loup and Vence have asked the French State to recognise a state of natural disaster after Storm Leslie hit the Côte d'Azur region last week. Heavy rain led to flooding, landslides and road closures causing considerable damage for some residents and the local council.

Landslide Causes RM30 to Close – Meanwhile, a road has been closed due to a landslide on Monday, 21st of October in the hinterland of Nice. The RM30 has been closed both directions in the Tinée Valley. According to the Town Hall, the reopening of the road isn’t scheduled until this Tuesday afternoon at the earliest.

Cap d’Antibes coastal path is closed - Due to work being carried out on the Cap d'Antibes its coastal path is closed this Tuesday morning and a swimming ban is in place. The measure is in force until midday today. However, further work taking place on the western part of the Cap, located around Villa Eilenroc, means that this part of the Cap is inaccessible until November 22nd and swimming is prohibited. The work is to improve pedestrian access to the area.

Prefecture files complaint after wreck pollutes the sea - The prefecture of the Var has filed a complaint due to environmental damage following the sinking of a yacht in Saint-Tropez. The 23-metre vessel was anchored in the bay of Saint-Tropez when it sank during strong winds last week. According to authorities the yacht was then left on the seabed until yesterday Monday 21st October, causing hydrocarbon pollution. Authorities are now taking legal action against the owner for failing to evacuate the wreck and causing environmental damage.

Fire in shipyard thought to be deliberate - Meanwhile, police suspect that a fire which destroyed seven boats in the shipyard of les Issambres in the Var last Friday was started deliberately. Firefighters intervened between 2am and 7am on Friday 18th October following the blaze which caused more then two million euros worth of damage. Investigators are awaiting various analyses in order to confirm the cause of the blaze.

Housing Assistance Regulations - The Monaco Government has updated housing assistance regulations to better reflect real-life situations. Key changes include more favourable aid calculations for certain private-sector categories, full support for surviving spouses over 65, and adjustments for income calculation, excluding student children's earnings up to a set limit. Additionally, the reference rent grid has been reevaluated for 2025, with new rates for various apartment sizes. These updates aim to improve housing support and were published on October 18, 2024.

Major event for the yachting industry to take place here in Monaco - A key meeting for leading figures in the yachting industry has been announced for the Principality as the first World Yachting Summit (WYS) is set to take place next year here in Monaco from April 15th to 17th, at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort. The event is set offer a platform for experts, innovators, and executives to explore critical challenges and opportunities shaping the industry’s future. The three-day event will see sessions take place in order to exchange ideas and focus on sustainable growth, advanced technology integration, and expanding into new markets. Sale of Alcohol Prohibited Tomorrow in Monaco - The sale of alcohol will be prohibited today Tuesday the 22nd of October, in Monaco. With the arrival of the Etoile Rouge of Belgrade supporters for the Champions League match against the AS Monaco at 6:45pm this evening. The sale of alcohol will be prohibited from 2:30pm to 6pm for all retailers. Every shop which fails to obey that rule will face sanctions.

The Var department, a top tourist destination -Finally, the Var department has become one of the top tourist destinations for the Toussaint holidays, with a 12% rise in holiday bookings for 2024, ranking just behind the Hérault and the Alpes-Maritimes. Many families choose it as a sunny, affordable alternative to foreign destinations. Campings in the region are seeing increased bookings, with the Toussaint holiday being their second busiest period after the summer.

Business

Shares in Boeing rose 3% on Monday on hopes of an end to the current crippling strike.  About 33,000 workers will vote on the offer on Wednesday after a more than a month-long walkout which has halted production of models including Boeing's best-selling 737 MAX narrowbody jets. The latest proposal follows weeks of discussions between Boeing and the union and even if union members accept the offer, Boeing still faces the challenge of quickly restoring production to pre-strike levels once workers return.

The UK government has said that overhauling workers' rights could cost businesses around £5bn a year. The Employment Rights Bill, which aims to tackle low pay and poor working conditions, was debated by MPs on Monday evening and passed its second reading by 386 votes to 105. Unions have praised the bill as "life changing" for millions of workers and say it will also benefit employers in the form of a healthier and happy workforce and boosted productivity. However, Kevin Hollinrake, the shadow business secretary, criticised the bill as "bad for jobs and wages" and "particularly bad for small businesses".

The death of 31-year-old Liam Payne former One Direction star has sparked a debate about the duty of care in the music industry, particularly for young people. More than 25,000 people have signed a petition saying the entertainment industry "needs to be held accountable and be responsible to the welfare of their artists". While the boy band went on to achieve phenomenal success across the globe, Payne himself acknowledged that it came at a cost. He admitted he used alcohol to cope with the level of fame "because there was no other way to get your head around what was going on". Sharon Osbourne and singer Bruce Springsteen are among those who have spoken in recent days about the negative impact of the pressures of fame. Football - Crystal Palace are facing their worst start to a Premier League season since 1992 losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Monday evening. Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has said he has opened talks with the club about signing a new deal. The 33-year-old has been at Anfield since January 2018 and his current contract runs out at the end of the season.

And – Cardiff City midfielder Aaron Ramsey, formerly of Nice has said that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will do an 'unbelievable job' at transforming Manchester United in their bid to challenge for the biggest trophies. Ratcliffe, a boyhood United supporter, completed a deal to buy a 27 per cent stake at Old Trafford in February and his hefty investment totalled around £1.25billion. 

Tennis – The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that off-court coaching will be allowed in tennis from January 2025. The decision was made at the governing body's annual general meeting and follows recent trials at some tournaments. The ITF says the move will make tennis "fairer and, potentially, more entertaining".
