Train hits exceptional convoy on level crossing - A TER has hit an exceptional convoy near Epinal in the Vosges eastern France. The incident occurred on Monday after the truck became stuck on the level crossing when the train arrived. The controller and six passengers were injured in the collision. The injuries are minor. 40 firefighters from the department are mobilized. A similar accident had already occurred on Friday May 19, 2023 in Belleville (Meurthe-et-Moselle) near Nancy when a TER had also hit a truck immobilized on a level crossing without causing any casualties.

Mayor attacked by resident - An elected official from Lauris north of Aix en Provence in the Vaucluse has stood down from his position after being attacked by a resident.  The resident, of a commune of 4,000 inhabitants, reportedly pinned the deputy mayor against a wall and then threatened to kill him. The incident led to 23 of the 27 local councillors also announcing their resignation. The resignations are still to be accepted by the prefect. Recently France’s justice minister has promised to implement severe measure for individuals who attack local officials following a recent rise in the number of cases.

Woman dies after falling from 3rd floor - A woman who fell from the 3rd floor of a building in Nice on Monday has died from her injuries. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon on Boulevard Carlone west of the city. Emergency services were unable to save the 41-year-old mother of six. The exact circumstances of the incident remain to be determined.

Captain arrested in port of Cannes - The captain of a catamaran has been arrested on Port Canto, in Cannes suspected of having filmed passengers in the toilets, without their knowledge. The 44-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after a passenger alerted police. Police seized his mobile phone and found several videos. The man has recognised an invasion of privacy but denies any sexual aspect in his approach, claiming that he wanted to check that his customers did not consume narcotics during the trip. He will now appear before the Grasse criminal court on December 6.

Tap water in the Var - Tap water is still undrinkable in several municipalities in the Var municipalities. For eleven days, tap water has been unfit for consumption in several areas of Seillans in the Var. Since the restriction has been extended to several other municipalities in the Pays de Fayence: Mons, Seillans, Tourrettes, Callian, Fayence (in certain districts only) and Montauroux (excluding Estérets-du-Lac). Local authorities say the analyses is a long process and that they hope the situation will be back to normal by tomorrow morning or at the latest on Thursday June 22nd.

Mayor of Nice demands an explanation from local official - The mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi has demanded an explanation from journalist and local councillor since 2020 Henri Jean-Servat following controversial remarks made by the journalist, criticising the council’s cultural policy. During a television interview Servat, declared that “many people who deal with cinema in Nice know nothing about it." When asked about the demolition of the historic National Theatre building, he replied "I don't think it's good, it's a shame." And he did not hesitate to describe as "horrible" the ten statues of animals that the artist Richard Orlinski has put on exhibition throughout the city until September 30th.

Business

The largest single purchase agreement by any airline in commercial aviation history has taken place in a deal announced on the first day of the Paris Airshow. Indian carrier IndiGo has made a record order for 500 Airbus A320 aircraft. The deal is said to be worth roughly 55 billion dollars. The company says that the new deliveries will help budget carrier IndiGo lower its operating costs and improve fuel efficiency.

And - Amazon has pledged to hire 5,000 Ukrainian and other refugees in Europe as part of a wider drive to help people fleeing persecution. Hilton Hotels, Adecco and Microsoft are also among the firms promising to offer work or career support. It comes as the global number of people forcibly displaced from their countries stands at a record 110 million.

Sport

Football - France beat Greece 1-0 on Monday evening, to maintain their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying. The victory means France have won all four of their qualifying matches and have not conceded. They are top of Group B. Elsewhere in Group B, Republic of Ireland gained their first points with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Gibraltar.

In group C Ukraine beat Malta 1-0 and England beat North Macedonia 7-0. Group D saw Wales lose to Turkey 2-0.

Cricket - At the end of another fascinating, fluctuating day, England require seven more wickets and Australia 174 runs for a 1-0 lead.

Tennis - Cameron Norrie marked his first appearance on the British grass courts since last year's Wimbledon semi-finals with a confident win at Queen's.
