Life without parole for Nice church attacker who murdered three - A Tunisian man who fatally stabbed three people in a terrorist attack at a church in Nice, almost decapitating one victim, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The 25-year-old had told the special court in Paris that he had no recollection of the attack in October 2020. He later admitted he was taking revenge on “you [westerners] who kill Muslims every day”. Armed with a kitchen knife, he almost decapitated 60-year-old Nadine Devillers, stabbed Barereto Silva, a 44-year-old Franco-Brazilian care worker, and slit the throat of Vincent Loqués, a 55-year-old church worker, at the Notre-Dame Basilica. He was convicted of the three murders and six attempted murders. On Wednesday February 26th,  the court made the rare decision to give him the maximum sentence of life imprisonment with almost no chance of parole for the attack described in the trial as one of “unusual savagery”.

It’s been reported that Instagram is considering launching its short-form video feature, Reels, as a separate app. The move comes as the future of Chinese-owned TikTok remains uncertain in the US. The boss of the social media platform told staff about the potential move this week. Instagram's parent company Meta has not yet however responded to the news. In January, US President Donald Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with a law signed by then-President Joe Biden that requires a sale or ban of the platform.

US President Donald Trump has said he is planning to hit goods made in the European Union with tariffs of 25%. The European Union said it would react "firmly and immediately against unjustified tariffs". Trump sparked questions about his trade plans, as he also appeared to raise the possibility that looming tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, set to come into force on 4th March, might be postponed again.

Figures show that in 1995, 50% of UK workers had access to a final salary pension - today, that number has collapsed to just 12%. While nearly half of Gen X had access to these schemes early in their careers, 65% say they are no longer available to them.

Football – In the Premier League on Wednesday evening Brentford and Everton drew one all. Manchester United beat Ipswich 3-2, Nottingham Forest drew 0-0 against Arsenal. Tottenham lost 1-0 to Manchester City and Liverpool's march to the Premier League title seems inevitable now - after they increased their lead to 13 points beating Newcastle 2-0. This evening West Ham are at home to Leicester.

Cricket – England’s loss on Wednesday to Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy was another dark day in cricket for England. Since their World Cup victories in 2019 (ODI) and 2022 (T20), England have fallen apart as a white-ball team, and it now looks like the right move is to replace Jos Buttler.

Formula One - McLaren's Lando Norris has set the fastest lap times on the first day of Formula 1 pre-season testing, edging out Mercedes' George Russell. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fourth. The top six drivers set their best times during a session that ran from the afternoon into the evening. Leclerc’s new teammate, Lewis Hamilton, drove in the morning session and finished the day in 13th.

Meanwhile in other racing news, the FIA has announced that the Monaco F1 Grand Prix will now require two mandatory pit stops to enhance the race. The change, confirmed on Wednesday also includes a new rule mandating that each team use at least three different sets of tyres during the event, with at least two of the three tyre types (soft, medium, or hard) if the race is run in dry conditions.

Currently, teams are only required to make one pit stop with two types of tyres. This new rule aims to add suspense to Monaco’s narrow, winding circuit, where overtaking is difficult and races often lack excitement, as seen in last year’s procession where the top ten finished in the same order as they started.

Drivers have supported this change, which will apply exclusively to the Monaco Grand Prix, set for May 25th, 2025. The Monaco GP is the third most contested race in F1 history, after Monza and Silverstone.

Tennis - Great Britain's Jodie Burrage suffered defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic as she was knocked out of the ATX Open in Austin, Texas at the last-16 stage. The British player, who had beaten Petra Kvitova in the previous round, started strongly before losing 4-6 6-3 6-0 to the Australian.
