Taxi driver charged for theft - A taxi driver has been charged by French police with the theft of luggage and cash from UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his wife, Nicola Green, following a cross-border journey from Italy to a French ski resort. The couple had travelled over 600km from Italy to France, when a dispute reportedly arose over the fare. The driver later filed a complaint, prompting a French investigation. However, prosecutors in Bonneville concluded that Lammy and Green were the victims, charging the driver with theft after he allegedly drove off with their luggage. The Foreign Office said it would not comment further due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

French Prime Minister denies knowledge of abuse allegations - French Prime Minister François Bayrou has denied having any prior knowledge of abuse allegations at the Notre-Dame de Bétharram school, as he appeared before the French parliamentary commission of inquiry into school violence on Wednesday. Testifying under oath, Bayrou, who served as Education Minister in the 1990s, insisted he had learned of the physical and sexual abuse only through the media.  His testimony comes amid growing scrutiny, including from witnesses who claim Bayrou was aware of problems at the school, including his own daughter, Hélène Perlant, who has said she was abused. While Bayrou continues to defend his handling of the matter, the commission's work underscores rising pressure for accountability in historic abuse cases across France’s educational institutions.

Paris becomes cycling capital - Paris has overtaken traditional cycling capitals Amsterdam and Copenhagen to become Europe’s most child-friendly city for cycling, according to a new ranking by the Clean Cities Campaign (CCC). Once known for chaotic traffic and bumper-to-bumper parking, Paris has climbed to the top thanks to a €250 million investment in the cycling infrastructure. Under mayor Anne Hidalgo, the city has added 180km of new bike lanes, reduced traffic speeds, and expanded “school streets” where car access is restricted. Cities in southern and eastern Europe, including Marseille and Rome, were ranked among the poorest performers.

Business

Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed it has no plans to manufacture vehicles in the United States, as the company navigates the ongoing fallout from President Donald Trump's tariffs on the motor industry. The company, which does not operate any factories in the U.S., temporarily halted exports to the country in April following the initial wave of tariffs, resuming shipments only this month. Jaguar also became one of several firms to withhold profit forecasts, citing uncertainty caused by volatile U.S. trade policy, which continues to disrupt global supply chains and planning.

Meanwhile, the UK government has dismissed claims that its recent tariff agreement with the United States could harm Chinese trade interests, stating there is “no such thing as a veto on Chinese investment” in the deal. The agreement, which eases some of the steep tariffs on metals and cars imposed under U.S. President Donald Trump, includes provisions requiring the UK to address U.S. concerns about the security of steel and aluminium supply chains. Beijing has expressed unease, warning the Financial Times that the deal could effectively exclude Chinese firms from UK supply chains for goods bound for the U.S. UK officials, however, insist the deal is focused on restoring fair trade terms and does not explicitly restrict Chinese participation.

Sport

Formula One - Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, has significantly reduced penalties for drivers who swear or criticise officials, following strong pushback from across the sport. Under revised guidelines issued on Wednesday, the threat of a race ban has been dropped, and the maximum fine for a first offence has been slashed from €40,000 to €5,000.  The updated rules now differentiate between comments made in the heat of competition and those in calmer settings, such as press conferences. However, stricter penalties of up to €20,000 remain for political or religious statements and incitement to hatred.  The changes follow criticism of the stricter rules introduced in January, after Max Verstappen was sanctioned for swearing at the Singapore Grand Prix. Drivers, including George Russell, had called for a more balanced approach, with the FIA now framing the changes as “major improvements” to the sport’s disciplinary code.

Tennis - British number one Jack Draper has been knocked out of the Italian Open after a straight-sets defeat to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who advanced to the semi-finals for the first time in Rome. Alcaraz will now face Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the last four as he continues his push toward the French Open.

Cycling - Mads Pedersen has claimed his third stage victory in the opening five days of the Giro d’Italia, edging out Edoardo Zambanini in a reduced sprint finish after a gruelling stage five. Britain’s Tom Pidcock settled for third. With the win, Pedersen extends his overall lead to 17 seconds and continues to dominate the points classification as the Giro heads deeper into the mountains.
