Road accident on Vésubie road – Two people have been seriously injured following an accident on the Vésubie road in Utelle. The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into the entrance of the tunnel, leaving both passengers seriously injured. Emergency services pulled a woman in her thirties and a man in his sixties from the wreckage. The woman was airlifted to the Pasteur Hospital in Nice, while the man was treated on-site. An Investigation is underway, but it's currently unclear what caused the crash.

Back to school in the Alpes-Maritimes: New school year plans - The Alpes-Maritimes will see a positive shift for the upcoming school year, with 39 new classes opening across nursery and primary schools. This will offset 16 closures, leading to the creation of 23 new positions. The Academy of Nice also confirmed that "100% of classes will be split in Priority Education areas," providing more focused attention to students in these zones. With an average class size slightly decreasing from 23 to 22. New positions will be available across various schools, including in Nice, Cannes, Antibes, and Menton.

Cryptocurrency payment revolution in Cannes restaurant - A restaurant in Cannes, is leading the way by offering customers the option to pay with cryptocurrency. "La Piastra," which opened its doors in October 2024, is the first in the area to accept virtual currency, including Bitcoin. The Manager Alexandra Barbulovic says the process is simple and fee-free for businesses, though customers bear a small charge. With growing demand, particularly from international customers, this payment method is expected to become more widespread, especially during high-profile events like the Cannes Film Festival. The town's mayor, David Lisnard, has even encouraged local businesses to adopt this innovative payment system.

Oceanographic Museum Monaco is hiring - The Oceanographic Museum in Monaco is recruiting for 19 positions, both seasonal and permanent, ahead of the busy summer season. Pétain manuscript to be auctioned in Nice - A rare manuscript written by Philippe Pétain, the French military leader during World War II, will be auctioned in Nice on March 11. The manuscript is expected to sell for between 80,000 and 150,000 euros, attracting interest from both private collectors and national institutions.

New series "Carpe Diem" filmed in Nice - Get ready for a new TV series, "Carpe Diem," starring Samuel Le Bihan. The series, which will air on TF1 starting March 10, is set and filmed entirely in Nice. Le Bihan plays a lawyer who, after being wrongly accused of murder, returns to investigate the truth. Record attendance at the 73rd Violet Festival – Finally; the 73rd Violet Festival in Tourrettes-sur-Loup has been a huge success, with a record-breaking 14,000 visitors attending over the weekend. The event showcased vibrant parades, highlighting the town's sister city relationship with Jinju, South Korea. The British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced that European leaders have agreed to draw up a Ukraine peace plan to present to the United States. At a summit in London on Sunday just two days after Volodymyr Zelenskiy clashed with U.S. President Donald Trump and cut short a visit to Washington, European leaders offered a strong show of support to the Ukrainian president and promised to do more to help his nation.

In other news, the survival prospects of French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's minority government are under threat as he will be trying to stop the Socialist Party from backing a no-confidence vote on Thursday. While Bayrou looks likely to ride out the no-confidence motion put forward by 58 far-left France Unbowed (LFI), Green and communist lawmakers, a loss of Socialist support would be a big blow, especially after he offered on Tuesday to renegotiate a disputed 2023 pension reform law to win their backing.

And - A Chinese firm which has more outlets than McDonald's and Starbucks has seen its shares jump by more 40% as they started trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The bubble tea company raised $444m (£352m) in the financial hub's biggest initial public offering (IPO) of the year. The company sells ice creams and drinks for an average of six Chinese yuan ($0.82; £0.65).

Sport

Football – In the FA Cup Fulham have beaten Manchester United on penalties and are now through to the quarterfinals. In this evening’s fifth round of the FA Cup Nottingham Forest are at home to Ipswich. Kick off is at 8.30pm French time.  

Cricket - India have beaten New Zealand by 44 runs in the final group match of the Champions Trophy to set up a semi-final against Australia.

Formula One - Adrian Newey says he's "not making any predictions" about his new role at Aston Martin, which officially begins today.  The most famous designer in Formula 1 will join as the team's managing technical partner after nearly 20 years at Red Bull.

Athletics – Former world record holder Paula Radcliffe has run her first competitive marathon in a decade on Sunday in Tokyo. Radcliffe finished in a time of two hours, 57 minutes and 26 seconds - 10 years after ending her glittering athletics career at the 2015 London Marathon.
